Intermittent 1150 fuel leak

Few days ago I arrived at a junction near home and noticed a strong smell of petrol. Couldn't see anything so drove off again in blissful ignorance. Then two days ago stopped in town (another v.short journey) to a very strong smell of petrol, much hissing and a cloud of steam from the RHS as I leant it over on its sidestand. It was petrol evaporating on the exhaust!

There seemed to be fuel coming from one of the two rubber to plastic fuel line connections that live on the RHS, just visible under front of the seat. Nothing I could do - they seemed tight and I was in a rush. When I returned bike showed no sign of leaks when I restarted it. Did 300 miles yesterday with no smell of fuel or sign of wetness from the aforementioned connections - although fuel consumption is not quite what it was - down to maybe 9.5 miles per litre.

Any flashes of inspiration?

FUEL LEAKS

i dont know if this is relevant to you but i had a recall on my 03 adv six weeks ago took it into my bmw dealer said they had had problems with the seals in the tank quick release couplings nothing wrong with mine but changed them anyway so they said.

Didn't know there was a warranty mod! It's an October 02 bike, supplied new by Rainbow, which I subsequently bought from Jefferies. I have never had any communication on this sort of "recall" issue. Same happened when a friend told me about a similar mod instruction re the ABS on his bike of similar vintage. Might go to Jefferies tomorrow and ask the question....

There wasn't a notice sent out...it was something they did when the bikes affected went in for sevice.

It's just the grotty crimp-up connectors they use on the fuel lines....all they do on the recall action is crimp them up tighter.

You can get them to do it, get a BWM hose crimping tool for a around £356.78 plus VAT or you can get your tolbox out and dig out a pair of these or something similar.....

if has recently been serviced I would be looking at the fuel pump seal.the O ring can get pinched on the rhs of the insided of the fuel tank had this on mine

As stated by Ming. I had sender unit investigated and seal leaked when replaced. All in order now

The small rubber "O" rings on the quick release connector can leak if caught when connecting best to put a bit of grease on them.

The O rings need to be the petrol imperveous type that don't expand on contact with the fuel, keep a few spare , they're easy to damage.

normal o ring is made of nitrile which is highly resistant to petrol according to my internet research.

Most likely are the crimp connectors, but it may be a perished fuel line. On my 02 Adv the line had split where one of the QD links are attached, also on the RHS. I renewed my petrol lines and replaced the crimp connectors with screw type ones.
