Advice need.

The digital display (oil, fuel and clock) on my 1150 GS has gone on the blink. SPC diagnosed that it was faulty, could not be repaired and want to replace it. Cost... can't remember exactly but about £230 plus fitting so about £300 all in.

Bikes only about 28 months old. SPC say they will write to BMW and try for some "good will" but reading some of the stuff on this site, I'm not confident that B'EM will shell-out any beans at all unless they have to.

I'm not keen on forking out £300 readies right away. Anybody here know of similar faults, case history I could refer to, to strengthen my case? Is finding and fitting a used one possible from a dead 1150? Could Steptoe motorsickle guru help here perhaps?

Any HELPFUL comments gratefully received.

Can't help on the replacement side but.......

the chances are that there's a stupid wee fault (dry solder joint etc.) on it. One of the things I find most fustrating these days is the complete refusal of companies to admit that electronic componants can be repaired :spitfire

If push comes to shove and you have to pay for a replacement, it'd be worth cracking it open and spending an hour or so reflowing (reheating & adding a bit of solder if required) the joints.

The RID display unit can get water inside- there is a drain valve in it which gets blocked ( not many people know that ;) ) - the water then builds up inside, immersing part of the PCB - which leads to strange behaviour or failure of the unit.

you can prise it apart, and try cleaning it up and see if that improves things -

Also a good idea to clean/unblock the drain hole if your ever working in that area -

yes Bob, i do have a RID unit - PM'd you :thumb

Bob,

If you end up buying the RID from Steptoe, I'd be interested in the headlights and possibly the bit with all the warning lights. PM me if you go down this route.

Has the guru come up trumps ??

Funny old thing; It developed a fault after I had washed the bike but I didn't notice until the following day. I don't normally "work on it (bike)" but I'll have a poke around and see what develops.

Thanks to all for the update - "if it don't work", I'll probably pop over to see Steptoe the bike fixing meister for some assistance/replacement parts

Steptoe, so where is theis drain situated. What is used to clear it, a bent paper clip is my fave.

I have a seperate RID unit - not from the headlight and instrument cluster .

Leave it a couple of days and see if it cures it'self . The second hand RID unit is £45 -

The drain is on the bottom of the unit - tale the unit out and you'll see it

I just noticed some water behind mine too, maybe an embargo on cleaning it is in order.

I do keep it under a 'breathable' cover, but could this be causing the problem?

Ah well, no harm in trying. Please keep me in mind if you split the headlight/instrument cluster up.
