Intermittent Starting / 1983 GS

Thought it was the starter button, but now I'm thinking its either the relay or the solenoid.

Found that the F tabs in the relay base were not gripping the relay M tabs. I used a thin nose plier to tighten them up. Seemed OK for a few days.

How can I test the solenoid?

Or is the starter motor on the way out?

Anything else to look out for?

Same problem mine in as much as button was starting bike and then seemed to get very temperamental. Cleaned and no improvement and when it doesn’t start you hear a faint click from relay. Have ordered a relay and will try that and check and clean connections at the same time.

Turned out it was just a bad connector on the relay. All cleaned up, wires stripped and new connector fitted and sorted. I will now of course have a spare relay as when that fails.
