hello ladies and gentlemen,my name is mark and i reside in sydney, australia. ive been doing all of my own servicing lately by reading the posts here and on advrider.my bike a 1200gsa 2005 model was running well until yesterday. while i was doing a tb synch,i disconnected the steppers and the bike went clunk clunk.the right hand side has no power,it gets fuel,it gets spark, but no power, does anybody have any suggestions, please help.also ive always had fueling issues with the bike and have purchased a power commander and was going to get it installed and mapped next week but will have to postpone as its going to the doctors on monday.

Hi Mark.

welcome to the site.
By "tb synch" I assume you were trying to balance the throttle cables? I usually do that above 4,000 RPM, where the "steppers" no longer have any function. Too late for this advice I know ...

Have you tried resetting the throttle position sensors to try and resolve your problem? Disconnect battery - reconnect - ignition on, wait for checks to finish - open and close twistgrip fully - ignition off - ignition on, within 30 seconds.

For the future the next planned GS-911 software update should include the ability to park the steppers for balancing.

You don`t need to disconnect the battery to reset the TPS just ignition on and open fully, take 3 secs, then close, 3 secs again, then repeat again.
Any other info on the bike? how long have you had it, who`s worked on it in the past, whats the previous fuelling problem you say about, any modifications, mileage?

God luck :comfort

thanks guys,my bike has 55,000ks on it,it always pinged for the first 2.5 yrs,i had it back under warranty numerous times before they pulled the plugs out and they were white.they couldnt fix it then and had to wait a week for a software update to arrive from germany.(sounds like a story)when i got it back its never been the same.every time it went in for warranty it came out going worse than it went in.the bike doesnt get ridden that much and only comes out for touring duties.it gets ridden softly.....i wanted to sell the bike but came up with a brilliant idea.i would do the maintenance myself and get the bike going properly.thats how i found you guys, oil, final drive-i even pulled the shaft out and put moly on the front spline.new tyres(contis)marc parnes balance, gearbox oil-when i did this the oil was putrid even though they resealed the gearbox under warranty because it was leaking,it had metal all through it.its always ran rough at idle since the upgrade so i looked at the stepper motors-if you pull them out dont turn the key on then off because the ends are spring loaded and they fly across the room then you cant get them back in.had them reset on computer and faults cleared, then the guy with power commander rings up its in and ready to be dynoed.i wanted to recheck cable slack so was redoing tb synch with slack, this time i unplugged the steppers then after 10secs or so it went clunk clunk-not so bad i hope, its only running on one cylinder-the left one,the right is not working unless i gas it up to about 4000revs then it runs.it will run on one cylinder at idle,i pulled both plug leads of each side and its the right thats not right.seems to get fuel as i pulled the injector off and it pumps.pulled a plug and it gets spark,it goes in on monday-was for a abs brake bleed but now have changed it to some diagnostics.being philosophical its making me a better roadside mechanic i hope,as my roadside toolbox contained a couple of prayers. will keep you posted and also will let you know how the power commander goes. thanks for any suggestions as they all help.mark.

to citybum and biglee,my problem turned out to be the idle actuators or stepper motors, they had to be reset by the bmw computer,i unhooked them as per jvb,s instructions(whilst doing a throttle body balance) and i had the problem described.obviously all dont go out when unhooked but mine did so be carefull,i would recommend leaving then hooked up and do the throttle synch at about 4000rpm.also dont unhook them from the bike and if you do dont turn the key and if you do that whatever you do dont turn the key off as parts of it will fly across the room like a kids toy(this was a previous problem)and they will need to be reset again(if you were a cruel b this would make a great april fools day joke).it goes in to get the power commander fitted on thursday so i will let everyone know how it goes.probably on a new post as not many interested in this one.lol.thanks.mark.

by the second unhook,i meant removal of the stepper motors from the bike.mark

Mark, it sounds like you could do with a GS911 diagnostic/service tool if you are going to delve so deeply into the bike. The latest release of the diagnostic software can 'park' the idle steppers when doing TB synch, and recalibrate idle steppers. It also reads and resets fault codes and many other things besides including ABS check. There is a GS911 reseller down under.
