Well, this goes strictly against my religion as a Gatesist, but I'd be obliged if anyone could help me with any crumbs about iPads.

I'm thinking of treating the good lady to one for Christmas. She has one of those new fangled iPhones, so is a convert, and she deserves something nice bless her (rather than me, naturally) ;)

If anyone of the Jobs persuasion can recommend any particular configuration or deal that's on at the moment that they've spied.. I'd be much obliged.

Get her an iPad2 which are on offer at the moment. The new 'Mini' is too small in my opinion.

16gb Wi Fi only is fine unless she wants to store a lot of data/photos etc.

3G only if you really need it

I guarantee she will love it :thumb

edit: the only sad thing is that the price will drop even more after Christmas but I doubt giving her a photo of one on the 25th with a promise to buy her one in January will cut any ice :P

She should be able to link it to the 3G on her phone as a hotspot anyway. I do that with mine and it works pretty well.

The main difference I could see, according to the reviews, between the iPad 2 and the latest model is the camera and screen. As I didn't want one for the camera and don't play games and such I decided to get the last model (iPad2) and got a 2nd hand one for £320. It's a 3g/wifi with 64g.
My first iPad and I like it. Battery life is much better than my netbook.

if it were me, i'd buy a new "iPad with Retina display", unofficially known as the iPad 4.

i like to have a GPS built in, so i'd buy the 3G model, but only for the GPS.

i've not seen an iPad mini in the flesh, so could be swayed, but i doubt it :nenau

i currently have an iPad 2 which works well enough that an upgrade (mainly for the screen) seems too extravagant :(

BTW you can't always tether them to your phone, it depends on your contract. it may well cost extra.

Got the iPad (third generation) with 64 gig and WiFi

It's the dawgs danglies Rob :thumb

Get the camera kit with it £25 and upload your piccies on to the iPad

I find myself using it more than my desktop iMac these days. Check my thread out for best iPhone Apps because, for the most, they will be suitable for the ladies iPhone and iPad :D

:beerjug:

there is an article in which magazine that rates them highly also there reliability they suggest an extended warranty is mostly not needed.
I dont currently own one but its iminent. dont buy atoo low memory version otherwise excellent ipad genuine ones get the best rating. Hope that helps.
Wi FI good enough depending on the usage area . 3g good If you need it

I'd go for an iPad 2 as well if it's a good deal, mine tethers to my O2 iPhone for Internet access no problem. Beter watch out, you may like it too!

Just get one.... they are brilliant ... oh, and yes in a few weeks time you will wonder why you didn't buy it ages ago !!!!

Ordered my wife an iPad mini 32gb which arrived yesterday. Obviously, I haven't opened it, but popped into the apple store in covent garden today as I was passing, and saw one. I think she will be very very happy on her birthday on Monday (ride report to follow:D):beerjug:

Love my ipad :thumb2

I've got a 16GB with the retina display with 3G

If you travel I'd suggest the 64GB one but if its for home use mainly then capacity doesn't matter as you can stream everything to it from your PC

That said you can stick movies on a memory card, name them in photo format i.e. DSC000001 and use the camera kit to access and play them

Overall the most used gadget I have ever bought !

If you have a NAS device you can stream downloaded music and movies wirelessly to your iPad via WiFi and also use its storage as your personal "cloud" saving space on the iPad itself.

I've had a 32gb iPad2 since it came out, I won it in a competition at work. It is a handy piece of kit. Mine came with Os4 but I upgraded to Os5 once I found out it was ok. Stay away from Os6 unless you want to lose Google maps.

I have the wireless version and an unlocked Mi-Fi thingy and I take it everywhere. It takes up no space at all on your bike either.

Regarding the iPad mini, I can't really see the point of it at all.

Can you download routes to a Garmin? If so, how do you do it?

Got to give credit to the marketing people at apple, in the middle of the biggest recession know to man they've managed to convince most of the world that they need this pointless peice of s **t which doesn't really do anything different than what any laptop will do.

Can't understand the fascination with them life will go on with out them they don't to anything that is essential to life, so why do people lust after them ???
