iPad? A non-believer needs help.

Can't understand the fascination with them life will go on with out them they don't to anything that is essential to life, so why do people lust after them ???

And.. you are posting on a Motorcycle website :augie

battery life is way better than any laptop, their popularity breeds more sussess as you find more and more apps to make them work better for you, lighter than a small netbook. for me though it was because I already had bought an old iMac as I was sick to death of bluddy Windows, so then the natural progression was to ditch the windows netbook and get an iPad to go with the mac and iPhone, making everything seemlesly (well, almost) compatible.

I got an iPad to complement my iMac, then a Macbook Pro to complete the holy trinity of Macs with a view to getting rid of my Desktop PC and Windoze Laptop.
As it is I now still ahve all of them and managed to get Apple TV and a Raspberry Pi into the bargain. :blast

As it is, unless I'm actually working I use the iPad more than anything else as its always on, permanently connected the t'internet and the battery lasts for days if you don't play games on it (which I don't).

Well, there goes that..

The other night the conversations strayed on to technology, and she started talking about iPads, and that she really wouldn't want one

I tried the angle that she was an apple chick right, and surely that'd fit right in with the iPhone she constantly bangs on about.

How wrong can you be :(

Ever tried returning an unwanted Christmas present before Christmas? :blast

You'll find that once she has one she'll be wondering how ever she managed without one. They are truly remarkable ;)

Ask Sue .... send her a PM :D
She didn't want one, couldn't possibly perceive any need for one ... wouldn't be without it now :D

Cheers buddy. Yep, I got to have a play with one a few days back and thought it was a great little piece of kit.

I'll try the soft sell approach again I think, if no joy it'll be "happy birthday to me" and she can make do with something far less expensive :D

Our house includes an iPad 4 and an iPad mini - I was skeptical of the mini before I bought if for my wife, but it does everythinmg a full size one does and weighs nothing.

I'm perfectly happy to watch TV/movies on it and its great as an ebook reader.

just seen my first iPad mini. have to admit, i was very impressed. the screen was very much more useable than i expected, yet the overall size was quite small and very slim.

had it had a retina screen, i might have bought one. as it was, i got an iPad4.

also saw a retina macbook - wow!

Got to give credit to the marketing people at apple, in the middle of the biggest recession know to man they've managed to convince most of the world that they need this pointless peice of s **t which doesn't really do anything different than what any laptop will do.

Can't understand the fascination with them life will go on with out them they don't to anything that is essential to life, so why do people lust after them ???

It may not fully replace a laptop, but, other than downloading/editing photos and word processing (and I do far too much of that at work), it's a brilliant gadget. 10 hour battery life, plenty of games, films and music to occupy myself on my travels and small enough to fit in my tankbag or read on the bog

Not interested in computers or technology, I'm a motorcycling gardener anybody trying take this iPad off me - you will be a pruning - cut down in your prime - best birthday present ever, :JB she will love it when she gets her hands on it Roberto:clap

I have an iPad '3' (64gb, wifi only). Bloody love it - I hardly ever turn the laptop n these days - only really for managing photos with Lightroom.

Although the iPad 2 is cheaper, I'd try out a retina display model (3 or 4) before making the decision - I looked at both and went for the 3 (the current model when I got it in April) - the display is just sublime and it also has a slightly faster processor and some other detail refinements.

Combine an iPad with a cloud based email account like gmail and cloud based storage like Dropbox and you can't go wrong - a real revelation to me and I'm a lifelong mac sceptic.

+1 for the iPad. Swmbo was very sceptical but I couldn't think of anything to buy her last Christmas so got her a basic WiFi model. I think she's used it everyday since :thumb2

I'd also give a massive thumbs up for my MacBook Air bought a few weeks ago. Stunningly good in every respect.

So what is the point of these tablets? Seen people wandering around taking movies / pictures and looking rather silly into the bargain as they can hardly see what they're taking the movie / picture of because there's a great big screen in the way. You can surf the internet, but so can a smart-phone, and you can put a smart-phone in your pocket.

Some seem to be able to do etch-a-sketch impressions, but what other use is for them as they seem to be limited / ports on storage space, so you can't update a GPS for example or download pictures / videos as the CF card has very similar memory in the camera compared to the one in the tablet.

I've a Samsung netbook, about 2 years old, a smart phone and a decent camera, and it might be nice to only have one bit of technology to take with me on holidays, but so far the tablets don't seem to be able to replace the other bits of technology. Or am I missing something?

what you're taking a picture of, is on the screen ;)

I thought the same as you.....until I got one

You need eyes like a shithouse rat to watch video, surf the net for any length of time on a smartphone

Laptop/net books are an arse on booting up and the OS are slow and clunky

Tablets are much faster and ready to go immediately, very portable and have access to mobile data effortlessly

So yes, you are missing something
