ipad and SD card storage question

just about to order an ipad and ditthering between a 32 and 64 gb version.

the only thing I can see chewing that much space is vids/films.
can I put ripped films on an SD card and using the camera/sd card access or copy them over, or does the Apple 'closed-shop' stop that.
If I can use SD as extra off-line storage, then I guess I'll save £75 and get the 32gb. the 64 is over 500 note which does cross a mental barrier.


Any ideas welcome.

you might be able to if you can rip the films to the right format, then use a file system that replicates what a digital camera would produce on an SD card. it works with images, but i've not tried it with video.

i have a 32GB ipad, and have quite a few films on it, so there is plenty of room. i rip them so they are approx 350/450MB in size. i think the quality drop is indistinguishable from bigger rips.

i don't really store music on i though. that's what iCloud is for

Just tried it. I used a Shinntto camera conection adaptor, with my SD card directly in the adaptor, it uploaded and played the movi OK. Its an AVI file. The file goes into the picture folder, not sure how to move it. i'm new to Ipad as well.

AFAIK you can only upload from an sd card and not play from it. As long as you've got enough memory for the upload, and then delete the film afterwards you might be ok. Seems a lot of faffing about.

Just be aware that because of the new iPad Retina display many Apps have grown considerably in size. Quite a few are over the 1Gb mark. So I wouldn't even consider the 16Gb version and possibly have a good think about whether the 32GB will be enough. Everybody has different uses for their iPad so smaller capacity may suit some people, but certainly not all.

I went for the 64GB version iPad and so glad I did as I soon went past the 32GB point. My iPhone 4 is also 32GB and I am forever having to delete apps/videos (most under 15 minutes) to put new stuff on it.

that's a good point, and one i didn't consider.


however, most apps are rubbish and never get used, so losing 50% would probably do me no harm at all
