ipad or netbook?

If you're going from anything non-Apple to an Apple product, then yes it will be better by default... :)

Typing long emails will the the only thing somewhat painful - but buy a bluetooth keyboard and it'll be like a netbook when set on a table.

Just gone from laptop to iPad. Only used the laptop like a netbook - email and browsing.

Very impressed with iPad. Different but seriously impressive. Bit like comparing a German car with a Japanese one! Slick, quick, no waiting to boot up, finds wifi and networks faster than I can think about them! Connects to everything without ages of setting up. :thumb

Sent something to print as an experiment last night. It had clearly found the printer beforehand and it just happened! No loading drivers or searching. Just there! Just happened!:D

If you like paying for everything & not being able to do all you can do with a pc its brill. The wife loves hers. Me, only pick it up because shes left in the way. Consider android power

See similar thread in the pub.

Buy an iPad with confidence.

Posted from a Swedish hotel, using their free WiFi, whilst listening to Radio 4's Today programme, checking emails and tidying up a presentation for a client.

As an owner of a used iMac (from this Parish...) and an iPhone, this WinXP eeePC is well past its sell by date but the flakiness and lack of reliable connectivity to wifi means it's on borrowed time.
An iPad will be the next purchase I suspect.

I have a few Apples and an iPhone. Was looking at an iPad for the mrs but too expensive as she just wanted to read books so bought her a kindle. Would be nice to have something on the road for routes and a little netbook would be good as I assume the Zumo won't work with an iPad. Mac air very cool but expensive. You can get a decent netbook for under £200 these days.

I've had an iPad since they first came out. It spends most days bouncing around inside a top box without complaint, does everything a lap top can do and more. The only thing I miss is the ability to use mapsourse/basecamp whilst on the road meaning I have to plan all my routes before leaving. If you travel by bike a lot and like to plan your routes in detail on a daily basis get a cheap net book, otherwise IMHO an iPad is a far better tool.

Since moving to the dark side (Apple Mac Book Pro) I have a good mind to make my little Intel Atom based EEEPC Netbook into a dual-boot 'Hackintosh' as it already runs virtually the same hardware as a mac mini. Seems the Unix based Snow Leopard OS is so much quicker than Win XP/7 even on inferior hardware.

Anybody else already tried it ?

Gotta be cheaper than an Ipad ??

I like the ipad but just dont want to shell out for one yet. I have a Macbook pro and a kindle. I've set the kindle up to check for email, Facebook, twitter, BBC news etc It is proving very useful on the road and is great for cruising around searching for free wifi. What it is not good at is typing lots of text. I'm not a fan of on screen keyboards either and this is putting me off the ipad.

In reality I will hold out another year or so to see what happens in the Android tablet market. A tablet with a slide out keyboard would win me over. I know the ipad has the bluetooth attachment but having separate bits is a faff and you've basically got yourself a Macbook Air then. So still on the fence until the prices come down.

Right, idiot posting time now...

Like the idea of an ipad for travelling, with tinternet, emails etc etc, and could live without the mapsource bit (maybe..) but how do you load photo's on it?

Some say upload via wifi to the cloud or similar, but the last laptop I took away I just popped the piccies onto that whilst away.

Like the points of view here..

but how do you load photo's on it?

You either put them on from your SD card from your camera using the attachment (in the link above this post) or you can also sync it to your computer at home through itunes just as you would for music and video files..

I have an Ipad and it does everything i need it to do as in watch video files Ive downloaded, browse the internet and play games. I took it on hols in February it was great for sitting at the airport, on plane and on the coach watching films and tv shows puts the time in great games too. Then at the apartment the free wifi keeps me happy checking emails and browsing. I use it every day in work to watch stuff on my lunch and many tea breaks its fantastic...

but i think if i was going on an extended trip i would rather have a small laptop just easier having USB ports, SD card ports and then you can also run any software you want on it too...

You just gotta see what your needs are and choose the product for those.. :nenau

I have the iPad and the camera kit, just plug in the card reader and plug in the card.
The option to transfer the photos come up straight away, also you can delete the card if it is getting full.

Couple of years ago I had a Dell Mini 9 that I hacked to run OSX. I've used nothing but Mac laptops since 1991 but needed something smaller than my macbook pro just to take to work and use there. Mini 9 was great as I could plug it into a keyboard and monitor at work. If I was taking it travelling I would have looked for a different model that had a slightly bigger keyboard as I found the small one on the '9 hard to touch type on.

If you can work with the hardware on the smaller netbook, or buy one that suits you, it's a no brainer.

I sold my '9 and bought an ipad, which is utterly brilliant. Only downside for longer tours is not being able to run basecamp for mapping.
