Evening all.

I'm heading off to Europe for a few days soon & would like to do a RR as I go along, rather than spend days doing it when I get home.
I need a cheap netbook that will allow me to upload pictures onto it from my camera (Olympus) & connect to Tinterweb via WiFi so I can then do the RR.

I have a tablet (Motorola Xoom) but it won't let me upload photos.

I don't want to do anything else with it so I'm just looking for a cheap, light, small machine that will do the needful without taking up half my top box.

There are plenty of Samsung Netbooks on ebay brand new for less than £150.

Have you tried acerdirect.co.uk they have a refurbished section and have Acer Aspire One netbooks for £129.97 not sure of the full spec you would have to see if it suits your purpose, they do have others as well.....hope thats of help.

help your self to a netbook if you want one, but your Xoom should easily upload photos, you need to work out why it wont, it runs android, its not a brand running a crippled version so it should be as easy as any other android device. The operating system can do it.
What is it your trying to do that it wont do for you? how do you connect to the device, card reader, put memory card straight into tablet? is it a problem getting the stuff onto the device or from the tablet to the net?

I'd rather not waste my money on a Netbook that wouldn't otherwise be bought but........
It's a very early Xoom so has no active memory card slot.
I connected the camera direct to the Xoom via a mini usb converter. IE the standard USB lead from the phone to the converter. Then the converter into the mini USB slot in the Xoom.
I've made sure I have the most up to date software as advised by some websites but the concensus appears to be that 'tablets aren't designed to have pictures uploaded into them from another source'. :ronno

I understand that I could xfer the pictures to my laptop from the camera then from the laptop to the Xoom, via 'copy'. But, apparently, direct from the camera to the Xoom is a no can do. :nenau
And I don't want to take my laptop with me, which is why I'm looking for something smaller.

But if you can tell me how to get pics from the camera straight onto the Xoom you'll be able to bask in the knowledge that you have helped create the best & most entertaining RR seen on here in many a long day (cough). :clap

Will deffo bear it in mind if I can't get the photos uploaded onto the Xoom. Thanx.

Possible way of doing it...

If you dont want to spend on a netbook then, Its my understanding that Xoom whilst not working with cameras as a usb mass storage device they will work with cameras that have PTP (Photo Transfer Protocol) mode I know that some olympus cameras do have that facility. If you check your cameras spec and see if it will go into USB PTP mode then it should work with the Xoom. You also need Android OS 3.1 or greater and a Motorola Xoom camera kit adapter for your camera.

right then, dont try and connect the camera to the tablet, take the memory card out of the camera and put it in a card reader, a standard USB one should work fine as the point of USB is that it is UNIVERSAL serial bus, however you may find there is a specific one recommended, It should then see the card as an attached "drive" drag and drop the pics from the card to the tablet and then upload to the net/dropbox etc

Cheers. I've e-mailed Olympus to ask the question.
On the face of it, it would appear that Olympus were quick to take on PTP but I'm beggared if I can find out whether or not my particular camera has the facility. It's relatively old, 2009 so we'll see what the good bhurgers of Olympus tell me. :thumb2

Thanx again, appreciate it. I'll see what Olympus tell me. Appreciate all the help.

no worries mate , it's boxed up as new . if you are interested , send me a p.m and I'll get it dispatched pronto . I'll even give you a 6 month gentlemans guarantee :thumb

Will do. Thanx again. You'll no doubt get a feel for how succesful (or otherwise) I've been via this thread.

That's a USB OTG (stands for On The Go) cable. Now fairly common. Loads on flea bay. Look for Nexus media importer app. If it is compatible with your version of Android it's the dog's B's.

Just checked and it is compatible with Xoom on 4+. So with the cable it effectively gives you a USB port on your tablet. You can then connect a USB card reader to access your photos or indeed a keyboard or mouse.
