Daughter dropped her phone today and whole top half of screen is cracked and splintered

Apple want £186 just to look at it - we've got phone insurance but excess is £100 for iphones.

Worth going with apple or is there a cheaper version available?

Just looking at bottom half of the screen is a cheap option, just rotate phone & all is good :)

Dropped my iPhone 5, smashed the screen. Looked at every option, not cheap. In the end made an appointment at apple store, they swapped my phone for a brand new one for£179. Still cheaper than paying £140 to a backstreet wannabe phone repair shop who will only f**k your phone up.!!

My 2p worth is don't try to repair it yourself. I recently purchased a Samsung Galazy screen (that's the glass cover that fits on top of the fragile TFT thing). I watched loads of you tubes and it even came with necessary tools all for £12. I heated everything with a heat gun, as per instructions, so as to seperate the glass from the tft. It was a swine of a job.because the glass is glued to the very fragile tft and eventually I fractured the tft, GAME OVER. Samsung TFT alone is approx £150+
If it only costs you £100 with insurance, go straight back to Apple.

Not sure how different the 5 is to the 3 for replacement screens but I dropped my 3 on a garage forecourt, shattering the screen.

A few days and £7.00 later I fitted a new screen, from ebay + tools, at home, on the table. The alternative was a £40 shop repair, 30 miles away or £160+ through Apple. It was a no brainer.

with the 3, you just take the screen out from the front and swap it. with the 4, you access through the back and have to take every component out bit by bit. the screen is the last thing left. i think the 5 is the same :nenau

if it is, it's not a job i'd do.

Thanks for the comments :thumb

Even the apple man on the phone apologised for the £186 charge

I may well go down the route of using apple and then claim off the insurance

Just smashed my iphone 5 up.

Called Barclays Bank.

Yes sir you are covered on our premier account mobile insurance.

Job done.

Check if you have bank account that you pay for monthly.

Check again with Apple - at a an Apple Store if there's one near you. I had my phones's screen replaced in NYC for something like $50 last year.

I've got similar with halifax - £100 excess though

I got mine (4S to be fair ) done at a local place, was about £60 if I remember rightly.

Good as new.

I replaced a touch screen on an ipod following instructions on youtube. The touch screen was bonded to the glass screen avoiding problems mentions above.

In my case the ipod was old and I was willing to give it a go. It turned out to be reasonably easy and I would probably try it again on something with more value.

I've done a few screen changes on 3 and 4/4S.

Parts for them are cheap.

Screens for the 5 are just ridiculously priced so its not worth DIY, go to Apple or claim on your insurance.

you will get a new phone when Apple repairs it because with the fall not just your screen cracks the shock of the impact can also damage the antenna connections......just bite the bullet and become a happy bunny again with a phone that works for sure.:rob

Take it to an apple store - they'll replace like for like for £179.00. My FIL found an iPhone 5 in the road, run over multiple times and absolutely poggered. Took in to store and after ascertaining it was registered to no-one they replaced with new for said sum.

correct ....up to now you will get a replacement phone for a fixed price if it was never opened by a unauthorised person and it is not beyond economical repair. A write off is present only when a serial number has been removed or the phone is absolutely bent or burnt or in contact with chemicals so it cannot be identified. Then Apple will send the device back to you or if you have set up a Express replacement they will deduct the full retail price of your credit card . :type
