My partner Catherine has an Iphone, which she's had for a month or two now.
Recently she installed Copilot (satnav) software on it, and since then, the battery goes flat very quickly, regardless of whether Copilot's running or not.

According to her (and she would know) the phone doesn't support multithreading (or should that just be multitasking?), so when an app is off, it's off.

Last night she uninstalled Copilot, hoping that would show for certain that it's the cause of the battery discharge, and when she went to bed, the phone was fully charged, and she'd rebooted it after the uninstall (and left it switched on). This morning the battery was completely flat.

She's done a search on tinternet for a solution, but hasn't yet found any useful information.

Have any of you Iphone users out there in Tosserdom encountered the same problem, or anything else causing your Iphone to rapidly discharge the battery?

Any assistance gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, she's already thought of that but since she's already loaded a few apps directly, she'd lose them and have to pay for them again. I think she's looking for a "cheaper" course of action. :D

I've passed on your advice though. :thumb2

Edit - Gary, do you have any experience of this particular fault, and if so, any idea what might be causing it?

Don't know about the iphone but re-loading apps on the ipod doesn't cost anything. The store remembers you and allows re-downloads for nowt.

Mine does that sometimes - doesn't seem to be any great rhyme or reason to it. Seems to sort itself out pretty quickly again.

Cheers folks. She's at work but I'm passing all this on to her. :thumb2

Every now and again mine does a quick discharge, normally associated with the phone becomming warm to the touch. An on-off cycle is all it takes to sort it out. That said, it hasn't done it once on the latest software.

I assume the phone is on the latest version of software?

Well at the risk of hijacking the thread thanks for the heads up - my iFone went belly up and was swapped out yesterday and first charge it was noticeably warm to the touch and battery life is crap today so a I have restarted it and bunged it on charge again. :thumb2

getting warm is normal during charge.

mine has never been noticeably warm during use.

Don't think the battery is any cop but recently I have taken to leaving 3G off unless I need to browse something away from WiFi and leaving WiFi off unless I need it and this has done wonders for battery life, I can get through a day now with normal usage whereas before I wasn't getting through a day.

My daughter's 2G easily outlasts my phone even in standby only tests side by side :(

if you turn wi-fi and location services as well, it will last even longer. as will stopping push email, and setting the check time to an hour instead of 5 minutes.

oh, and turn auto brightness off, and set manual fairly low.

of course, if you do all that, you might as well have bought some shite old nokia :D

She's actually using it as a phone right now but I'll update her once she's finished.

She does use location services but (AFAIA) doesn't use push email.

I'd also imagine she has WiFi off when not in use too, but she can surprise me...

Thanks again folks!

It could well be that Co-pilot automatically changed the settings of the phone so that things like LBS and wifi were on all the time, when they weren't before. Even though Co-pilot has been uninstalled the settings are still there.

3G, wifi, bluetooth and LBS will have a big impact on battery life.

She's just told me she's always had brightness at max, push email on, location services on, wifi on, and the battery problem only manifested itself after Co-pilot's installation, so it does seem that Co-pilot's done something else (although it may just be "one of those things".

She is aware of the effect all these settings have (she's an IT support officer and more tech-savvy than me, since she's used to sorting out other people's PC problems), but even with them all on, as they were before Co-pilot, she still managed to get a day's use out of the battery, so she's still looking for a reason for this.

(sounds like she's reinstalled Co-pilot since she'll be needing it tomorrow...)

The search continues...

Is this for a 3GS, or 3G ?

I have a couple of mates with the 3GS, which is noticeably faster than my 3G. But the battery life on the 3GS is appalling, which is why I haven't upgraded.

They were advised by the Genius Bar at Apple Kingston to switch off push e-mail, all the other settings mentioned make a small difference, just this one makes the most. Prior to stiching push e-mail off, they would barely get 24 hours out of the battery.

Cannot comment on any effect Co-Pilot would have, in theory it should make no difference to battery life, as there is no multitasking on the Apple flagship phone.

I'd be tempted to get it swapped out, for a replacement.

Interestingly, I do know using Co-Pilot on my o2 XDA II, about 3 years ago, it did nothing to the battery life. That's progress I suppose.
