My Dad's just bought a 30gb iPod. He's downloaded iTunes, can select tracks from the main library & can create new playlists.

However, he cannot highlight either individual or multiple tracks and transfer them to the new playlists using drag & drop. Every time he tries, he sees an a black circle with a bar through it, bit like a No Entry sign - he's not that PC literate & although I have an iPoD, it's only a 1gb Shuffle using iTunes version 6, he's using version 7.

How does he download music to the 30gb iPOd?
Can he download individual playlists?

Thanks in advance. :thumb2

you don't so much download playlists with I tunes, you create them. The music has to be loaded onto your i tunes first, - normally a case of put the CD into the PC with I tunes open and it asks you if you want to import it into I tunes. Once it is in there you just drag your tune into a playlist. The playlist is no more than a tagging system for a database of tunes really, to my knowledge it does not duplicate the file it just adds it like a hyperlink really.

If he can't drag existing tunes that are in the i tunes database then something is wrong. You do not have to have your i pod connected to put together the playlists. Next time you synch/connect the i tunes on your PC will make the changes on the I pod.

Hope that makes some sense!

I've just about mastered an 80 Gb iPod.

Never used iTunes before last week.

The iTunes version I have offers to convert any CD and stores it in my iTunes directory.

When the iPod is connected to re-charge the battery or to update the music list, it transfers the added CD or tracks bought on-line that are as yet not in the Ipod.

Conversely, if anything is removed or deleted from the iTunes directory, it removes them from the iPod.

Playlists are created on the iPod itself. They can then be saved on the device. It's possible that playlists can be created in iTunes too but I haven't bothered as it's seems pretty easy to do on the iPod itself.

Transferring DVD's is a bit different if his has that facility (that took me longer to work out).

Had the same problem. Couple of questions. Has he registered the iPod with the computer and authorised it? In addition there are a few things that he can do to establish how he has his settings on the computer.

When the Ipod is connected, he should click on Devices - right click on his iPod which he should of named. He will get a list of options on the bottom of the main page called summary. He can chose to download automatically or manually. If set to automatic all his music on itunes will download onto the iPod automatically. If manual as I have it, you can pick and choose.

Playlists - The black line he sees is having NO effect on being able to move the music. Drag it and then let go over the new playlist. Then click on the playlist and you will see the music.

I've just bought one. to add songs to a playlist I just drag and drop from the library. as I click on the library song it is highlighted.
I don't know about downloading individual playlists, all I know is that when I connect my iPod to the PC it automatically syncronises with whatever I've done in the library.

I'm still learning and that's all my limited knowledge I daresay Cookie or one of the other iPod "gurus" will be along soon .

Correct.

Mine will sync across the playlists if you auto-update, but not on manual.

come on spill the beans on that. 'been trying to work out how to get some mp4 movies onto the i-pod.
I was sent this link to a forum by MotoMartin....

after I asked Phil how he managed it.

I bought the Cucusoft iPod video software and just followed the instructions.

It seems the most non-toxic of the various programmes available and it works (easily if I can manage it).

Use Media Monkey instead.

'Tis a free download. Following advise on here I stuck it on my two kids PC's and they now happily load stuff to/from their Ipod Nanos. :thumb

thats cos you've got 'auto-synchronise' checked.
only good if you can fit - and want - all your music on your 'pod.

i still prefer meedjamonkee though

That's 'cos I'm a lazy git and cannot be arsed to do it the manual way (I find it just as simple to let iTunes copy the contents then remove the odd one or two tracks that I don't want before sync-ing).
