Off to Ireland next week for a few days to watch the World MXgp round.

Just having a look on my Mapsource (version 6.5) and see that once you're outside Dublin... theres booger all detail! Are all the City select versions so undetailed in Ireland?

Many thanks

Will

Yup, hardly any details on Garmin maps for Ireland.

Sad but true.

Maybe the next version will be better. That will be 8.0 for the maps.

Version 6.5 is MapSource, and has nothing to do with the version of the maps you are using. MapSource is the program to work with the maps. MapSource updates are free.

City Select or City Navigator are the maps. Upgrades are $100 / $150.

Cheers,
Michel

I believe that there are people driving round Ireland creating the maps for Navteq as we speak, so CS / CN V8 should in fact be better. But you'll have to wait for early next year to see it...

Thanks for that... I'll have to find that old papery foldy map thing then!

Garmin City Select V7 had plenty of mapping for Southern Ireland when I went to Lahinch. I didn't have any problems even in the wilds of Mayo :)

I'm a bit confused in this (sory to wander a little off thread), but I recieved a quest from gps warehouse last week with city select v6 enclosed. Have I been sold an already obsolete version that will cost me to update? (I've already updated mapsource foc).

Yes you have an "obsolete" version, but you can get a free upgrade to the current version once.

The beauty in that is, if you don't need the upgrade to 7.0 - and you have NOT REGISTERED on the Garmin site yet - you can wait and get a free upgrade to 8.0 early next year.

The most important part here is, that you don't register the unit before the next version is out. If you register now, you can get a free upgrade to 7.0. If you wait until 8.0 is out, you can get that upgrade.

Cheers,
Michel

As Migsel, says...

Garmin still ships to its distributors, the Quest with V6 and if the user register's with Garmin they send you V7.

Any upgrades or software updates has always been handled by Garmin to its registered users.

CitySelect v6 has very very poor coverage for Ireland (unuseable, in my opinion). Routing from Dublin to Roscommon (which is in the middle of the country) takes you across a ferry to the UK, acroos the channel tunnel and into the middle of a small lake in Switzerland... Go figure... :eek

Thankfully, v7 is a whole pile better.. Still missing a lot (most) of the very minor roads, you might find yourself being routed some pretty indirect routes because it isn't aware of many of the minor roads (which can be essential for travelling around Ireland). It's also (understandably) missing some of the major changes to the Dublin road system that have taken place since January (i.e. the M50 extension to join the M11), If you can hold out for v8 though, I would wait around...

Must agree with Whatton. Having read previous posts on here about using the GPS in Ireland, I've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of detail on City Navigator V7.

I've been over before, and didn't bother taking the GPS as I thought it would be just one more thing to worry about - and the benefits would be negligible. This year I took the GPS over to Lahinch and virtually every road we used was on City Navigator. The only road we found that did not appear on the GPS, was the tiny road that lead up to the Alwee Caves.

If you've read Migsels post above and aren't sure if you're registered or not, you may find THIS THREAD very useful. The really relevant bit is towards the end.

Thanks for the screen shots Whatton. Sadly my version is 6 and so it's like the first pic and I can't be bothered (afford) to upgrade to V7 just for this trip. For the rest of Eur. the v6 is fine. Thanks for all the help everyone
