My friends have been involved with Habitat for Humanity building projects in Belfast, Ethiopia and Romania and are now planning a project in India. I think Habitat for Humanity is a great organisation and wanted to do something to help them out by way of fundraising. You'll maybe recall that I put a vote out on UKGSER a few days ago asking which one of two challenges would be the hardest and the majority voted in favour of the IBA Circuit of Ireland - thanks guys! :eek

The IBA (Iron Butt Association) is a group of motorcyclists "dedicated to the sport of long distance motorcycle touring".

The challenge is to ride a complete circuit of Ireland in under 24 hours and pass their verification process by producing witness statements and stamped and dated receipts from each of the 5 towns I must visit.

Hopefully I'll manage it (without developing an iron butt). Hopefully I'll get to do the challenge within the next 4 - 8 weeks.

Who is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity’s vision "is of a world where housing poverty and homelessness have been eliminated, and everyone has a safe, decent place to live; a place that they can call ‘home’, because we believe that the home is a key catalyst in helping to permanently break the cycle of poverty."

While the organisation is based on the Christian principle of being on the side of the poor and vulnerable, they build houses without selecting the homepartners based on their faith and they will work with anyone regardless of their faith or lack of it.

Habitat for Humanity works all over the world, in fact, one Habitat for Humanity house is completed somewhere in the world every 8 minutes!

Habitat for Humanity International builds, rehabilitates and repairs simple, decent houses with the help of homeowners, known as partner families, volunteer labor, and donations of money and materials. Often, skilled personnel such as masons and carpenters are employed for specialist jobs.

Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and are financed through affordable long-term loans. Mortgage lengths vary from four to 30 years, though most are around six to eight years. Monthly mortgage payments go into a local revolving fund to be used to build still more Habitat homes. In short, Habitat for Humanity is not a “giveaway” program.
