Is anyone in London insured (fire and theft) with BMW?

Hi, I'm considering switching from Bennets at the end of my contract (or sooner) that will be in April.

Bennets it's ok so far, but my fire and theft cover works only if the bike is garaged at night (there was another funny post about this last year due to a misunderstanding between me and the insurance when I started the contract).

That's fine since I keep the bike garaged not too far from where I live 99% of the time, but it looks like that when I'm travelling or on the occasional night I sleep out or if I keep the bike in the court where I live (I have an allocate parking space inside, but it's not a garage) the fire and theft cover won't work since the contract is simply void.

It's not a matter of money, they simply won't insure it if not garaged at night.

Just simple question:
Is it the same with BMW Insurance or not?
My bike's value is approx 6k, or even a bit less now.

My previous bike in Italy was insured (third party and fire and theft) with BMW and I had no limitations. Yes, obviously it was a bit more expensive compared to what I pay now.

And... any advice or things to keep in mind when switching insurance?

thanks :beerjug:

try ebike,

Bennetts are a broker.

My first year of insurance, was through Bennetts, and was underwritten by BMW.

Or - can you go to BMW direct?

Yes, I know they are a Broker. The insurance they found me is actually in Gibraltar, but that was the best they could find. I mean contract-wise... I don't care about it being in Gibraltar :D

I did a quote online. Is roughly the same price as what I pay now, a tiny bit cheaper. They didn't ask about garaging (as bennets did) on the form, so that's why I asked ;)

I've been BMW Insurance Services client before (another country) and I had zero issues. Also, I'm up for paying a bit more to avoid obscure contract clauses or staying on the phone for ages every time.

I think you are just a dodgy person. I insure my bike as NOT in a garage even though I have it in a garage. Just in case the buggers refuse to pay up if I was in the house getting ready to leave or just got home and the bike was still outside.

BTW .. this is slough .. shit like that is very likely.

The option of insuring it as not garaged would be welcomed as well.

I have had BMW branded insurance (devitts/NIG) for the last couple of years. Always insured as parked on street in Slough.

Try it tomorrow :nenau

Are you sure you're reading it right? All my polices have had the garage parking clause but states that if parked at the "garaged at" postcode during certain hours(overnight) it's got to be garaged to be covered. I can park anywhere else if I'm away from this address. How can you go away on holidays if you've got to be home every night?

I have just checked my BMW policy and it states:

Increased theft excess
You have agreed that you will keep the motorcycle in a locked garage or building either at your home address or at the garaging address declared to the insurer when the motorcycle is not being used. If a theft of the motorcycle occurs within a 500 metre radius of your home address or the garaging address when the motorcycle is not in a locked garage or building, the compulsory excess will be doubled.

This implies that if the bike is more than 500 metres from the declared garaging address then it is covered and the normal excess applies. ISTR I did ask this question at the time I took the policy out and they confirmed my understanding was correct.

FYI the BMW brokers are Devitts (I think) and the underwriters are NIG.

Edit: Oops :blast, I've just noticed the title said anyone in London. I'm not in London but I wouldn't have thought it would have made a difference to the policy, the premium would be loaded to take location into account.

I'll check my contract again, just to be 100% sure. ;)

BTW, looks like the BMW insurance would insure me even with "bike left on the road" option. I'll call them to confirm.

From what I remember garaging the bike gives you a percentage reduction in the premium, 10% I think.

Just spoke now with BMW on the phone.
Their insurance company (I forgot the name) will insure my bike fully and as "parked on the street" (even though I'll still keep it in the garage most of the times) for a yearly price that is just a tad more of what I'm paying at the moment, and with a decent excess.
I'm switching.

You should switch every year anyway. A mugs game to stay with the same broker, they'll rob you every time you renew and gradually reduce your benefits and increase your xs just to line their pockets.

Luckily one of their competitors is always willing to undercut :thumb2

Ok ;)

Actually it's not convenient to switch now because I'd still have to pay a lot.
I'd change before this cover expires, hoping that the prices for BMW will be roughly the same.
