Is by-passing the side stand switch an MOT failure?

So, the side stand switch failed on the petrol forecourt today as I went to ride off. Had to splice red/white cable to switch on the forecourt to get home.

Does anyone know whether the side stand switch is part of the MOT test? If it is 'not' part of the MOT test, I'd prefer to leave the switch by-passed and just neaten up the wires. If it is part of the MOT test, I guess I'll have to get a new switch.

Whether it is part of the MoT or not I would strongly recommend that you fix it. I rode off with a sidestand down once, fine until the road curved to the left, stand hit the road, bike and I ended up on the wrong side of the road, and an oncoming car braked to give me room. If that car had been closer I could have easily been hit. You could fit one of those rubber extensions that flicks the stand up without jolting the bike to the right.

Cable tie it up until you get it fixed as a wee incentive to get it replaced ASAP

In all honesty it may not be part of a test But the number of times we have had to warn bike club members of sidestands down as they rode off is incredible

It could get expensive very very quickly for the bike and more importantly you!

No. My DRZ had the wiring loom removed. It has regular MOT.

FIX IT .
i once told someone how to bypass it , and told him to order a new one , he did , and he didn't .
went for an MOT , met his friend , who told me he was dead , had i spoken to Essex police ?
get back to work , Essex police rang me , grilled me , i had worked on the bike 6 months previously . had i done it .
some while later ....i got a letter , from his widow , he left her and 3 kids . this was 12-14 years ago ....i still have the letter.

FIX IT , BEFORE YOU KILL YOURSELF WITH FORGETFULNESS.

PS, on previous bike, big mistake taking the side stand off (spring)... removing the spring was easy, getting it back on was an absolute bugger..... what's the spring like on the GS side stand - easy or hard to re-attach?

Use coins or strong washers to stretch the spring. Use a scredriver, pick etc to insert these one by one on either side. This will lengthen the spring sufficiently to make removal and refiitting possible.

Use a Long flat blade screwdriver fit one end of the spring in place and hook the other end on the screwdriver and then stick the end of the screwdriver around the spring stub and twist and lift and the spring should slide down the screwdriver and slide over the stub it rests on

BUT be careful if its a first go a cable tie on the bike side of the stand can help prevent the spring flying off !! and at You!
