I've got a Quest that 3-4 years old. I ordered a software upgrade from Garmin, thinking it was, naively, free. Anyway I got it and uploaded to CD to my PC and now it's saying I need to unlock it for $80 to use it properly. I was just wondering if it's actually worth the money. I don't have any problems with my old mapping for what I use it for.

Cheers

Don't tell anyone but a friend of mine downloaded an unlock key from t'internet, I don't know where he found it and cannot condone this type of action but people do it and it seems to work very well.

if you feel the need to update your maps, wouldn't getting the latest CN 2010 be a better idea?

an even newer version will be out next spring as well.

Daffy: worth a look I guess. I'll have a mooch.
Cookie: I guess the 2010 would be a better bet. But that sort of brings me back to my original question of are these upgrades worth the cash? What do they put in them every year that is worth the money?

I'm off to hunt down an unlock code:augie

i seem to remember that 9 is something of an improvement over 8. 10 less so over 9.

used the latest maps in france and switzerland this year and they are stillnot completely accurate/up to date.

i tend to upgrade every couple of years.

You've answered your own question......if what you have causes you no problems, then no, its not worth updating.

You run the risk of significantly slowing down the quest for one thing, as software tends to get bloatier and more complicated, which the humble yet brilliant Q1 has problems dealing with.

As the map tiles get more information in them, the maps you can load get fewer.....not a prob if you're only using it in the UK for example, but go on tour with it and the limited 243 (iirc) mb memory suddenly looks a lot smaller.

I've tried several upgrades on my Q1, and have binned them.......I'm currently running with CN6 and Morocco topo on it, and that's fine for all of mainland Britain and the run down to and around Morocco (Maroc topo is only 32 mb!)

So, No, don't bother, it's not worth it IMO :thumb2

There, that's £40 of beer tokens I've just saved you :beerjug:

Cheers Fanum, that's what I was after.

Another thing: after popping off to Google to try and find an unlock code for Euro 09 I clicked onto a torrent site and unloaded a whole heap of sh*t onto my PC. I didn't even try to download anything, just clicked to open the site. The dodgy Antivirus Pro 2010 spyware programme downloaded to my PC causing it to crash. Spent the last few hours sorting it out. My Avast antivirus couldn't find a problem but stopped the spyware conecting to outside sites, MalewareBytes found the problem but couldn't get rid of it as the spyware was blocking it. After searching the net I downloaded Spybot - Search + destroy which sorted it out.

Lesson learned for me. Everyone else: careful what you click onto.
