As im sure some of you know I'm selling my bike. I decided to advertise it on Gumtree.com. The ad had been live for no more than an hour when i got a text from
+1 america
201 new jersey
8770315 (supposedly a mobile number but same number of digits as a normal US landline)
"Hi want to purchase your bike on Gumtree. Let me know your final price on & its mileage on my email angelina.jacobs (AT) aol.com
Cheers Angelina.

Am i being just a bit too suspicious that an angelina jacobs from the UK might be on holiday in new jersey, and may want the bike when she gets back OR is it a scam and has anyone else had it. If she hasnt read the ad properly and does not know the mileage I'm guessing its probably a scam..

Anyone care to comment perhaps.

By the way the email address i gave is the one she sent to me so if its a scam I see no reason for a moderator to remove it or asterisk(*************) over it. If she's trying to scam me then a few choice words back by email surely wont be the end of the world?????

If she's genuine, then I'll bet she's well chuffed that no end of freaks now have her No.

Shall I see if she's interested in a meet when she comes to the 'good ol UK' to pick it up?

I think it's a scam - what do you think?

Post up the full headers of "her" e-mail and that'll tell us a bit more.

Thanks Schtum, but wasnt an email was a text message with the number i posted previously... Ta for the help though thats jolly decent of you old chap.........:hide:hide:hide:hide:)

I think it`s almost certainly a scam but i would be tempted to play along for a while just to see what happens.Usualy they will put their money into an escrow account(so they will tell you)and arrange collection or variations on that theme.
Ask her how she plans to collect the bike.

This looks like a typical "Paypal" scam to me; the purchaser subsequently agrees to send payment by Paypal and for the bike to be collected by their "agent".

Once collection is made they rescind the Paypal payment leaving you with no bike and no funds. In these circumstances you have no Paypal protection as you don't have proof of "posting"!

Take care!

Tim, please dont roll yer eyes at me or ill stand on the fookers n squash em!!! lol. Yes I do know its a scam now but at the time of posting there was a degree of uncertainty, but now there isnt. Case closed as far as im concerned. As i said in my OP " the soft side of my human nature sort of hopes and wants it to be genuine" or words to that effect.

Ta very much all for the posts but I think it's died a death now, dont you?????

I was about to close the thread when this happened...

Hi Mark as thread starter you can close it so it disappears
ill cut to the chase dont wanna waste anyones valuable time. Still getting text messages about my bike asking me to reply to an email address, BUT heres the odd bit. The number is now replaced with a name instead in this case thomas.lieb at the top of the message instead of 07778877768 etc. so i have no idea how theyve managed that but if anyone knows please let me know.

Still got to be a scam, oh and for anyone thinking of telling me to just reply to it, how do you reply to a text message that has NO numers in it.....

I still say it sounds crackers ...... :augie

On my phone it's quite a complicated procedure. you look at the text and reply in the box marked 'type a message'!

Obviously havent understood what I wrote. on any phone there are 2 boxes. one for the body of your text and another one to enter the number to whom you would like to reply. HOWEVER this clever chap has sent me a text message with the words "THOMAS.LIEB" where normallly you would expect to find a phone number. Obviously I cant reply to him because its letters in the reply to field and not a number. Do hope this clarifies it a bit. Did a google search but no joy as to how this chap is preventing me from seeing his number and no idea how he seems to have replaced his number with his name, assuming thomas, lieb is even him......

Thanks for the replies...
