Is it just me or is cleaning the GS the worst bike ever?

I did buy a twin cam before the LC as it was not in the best of conditions and potentialy I could leave it dirty more than I'm used to... but the engine went south so bought a minter LC :blast

Now Im woried about it getting rough which was the idea getting a BMW in the first place.. the Bandit I had before was in showroom condition but did take time to keep it like that....

Same here. I cleaned my Twin Cam twice a year through 5 winters and it looked like it when I came to sell it. Bought and LC which is currently mint about 6 months ago. Still only cleaned it once in all that time (two tours to Scotland - second one through Storm Ali) but my care free resolve will be tested now the salt is down - it just looks so shiny at the moment :(

I cleaned mine once, and the bloody thing got dirty again so I gave up.

It now gets cleaned by the dealer when it goes in for a service, and it will get cleaned when I sell it.

It's final PCP value will be the same whether I clean it or not!

Are all these bought on PCP... is it bad news if you actualy own these thing ;) so people dont care much about looking after them?
I paid £8K for mine and I want to get as much back when I sell it as I can so will try keep it nice....
£8K is the most ive ever spent on a bike (I know... £16K being spent on here often) ... I know its low risk at that amount... but I am from Yorkshire :)

Correction... £8K is the most ive spent on a bike in one bit... ive done many up to sell where the bike and parts would exceed this ;)

First time I've bought on PCP, and probably the last (I'm old!) but really can't see the point in being over protective of it as the only one who will gain will be BWM!

PCP is the reason for the high purchase prices and poorer quality, in my opinion, as the only way to make it pay is to charge high prices and keep manufacturing costs as low as possible.

I thought that but according to a HD salesman he told me if you part ex your pcp bike in, they will + or - based on the condition of the bike.

I could have misunderstood as that conversation took place after a few pints on the Plymouth Santander crossing.

Bought mine outright 15K. I look after it. But I’m not precious about it. Use it in all weathers. I keep my bikes for ages. Last one 10 years.

I'd had my Bandit 17 years when I got rid... better than showroom condition.... 17 years and 17K.. moste done in the early years if i'm honest... Great bike, but you have to have a change every now and then :)

Do you intend to keep the GS 10 years???? Dare you ???

I've had mine for 10 years, it still scrubs up nice on a Sunday if its been used in the week ( I tend to use the Tmax for work now).

I should get another 10 years out of it if I carry on with the maintenance and cleaning.

No reason why any bike won't last if cared for.

I am a bit worried about keeping the GS... got to say the Bandit cost me £0 over 17 years except std service bits :)

That's fair enough Bob and more reason for a decent lathering in something like ACF periodically so when the crap is washed off the bike it comes up nice and tidy. I used to have nowt but a bike for years as my main transport so know only too well when you have to ride 50-100 miles commute each day, a wash once a week or fortnight is about as good as it gets.

My dealer the last few years did an ACF50 treatment which I availed of. Don’t think they are doing it this year so will find someone to do it professionally even though I have a bottle at home. The protection and results seem much better when you can use an air gun to get fine mist versus me painting or spraying it on.
I had that shitty grey coating you and the bike are covered in on a wet day with a salty road.

That or XCP Professional which the makers claim is better. I stick with ACF for the bike and use XCP on the underside of my car, especially around the rear sub-frame and suspension linkages. I've found it a bit too gloopy for my liking when applied to the bike. I use the bottle sprayer these days and buy my ACF in bulk. Got a good deal on the last litre which was £23 including the spray bottle (delivered) and that should last the winter with ease. It's not a lot to pay to keep the bike free of corrosion. Makes cleaning it a bit easier too I've noticed.
