being a lazy bastid , to save me taking the tank off , is it ok to charge the battery via the socket by the starter? dont wont to fry any expensive boxes.

Yep. Ive been using an optimate on all three of my dumptrucks, including the current one, via the socket. They do a specific BMW adapter plug just for that purpose.

I have them back in again too if you wish

Another thing is check the socket on your bike for greeny blue dust / goo in the sockets If it's in there and won't clean out then just change thge socket for one of my (or anyone elses sockets if you prefer) because the corrosion creates a high resistance and then the charger doesn't work correctly

Also 2 pairs of my Plug + socket is £9.79 delivered UK :aidan and the socket replaces the original BM one in the starter cover (you just need to fit 2 spade terminals) or you can drill a hole up by the beak and fit another one (or 2) like the adventures have again a length of wire and a fuse block and some terminals is all that is required

Where can I get one from?

Any stockist if Optimates should do them, if not they should be able to get you one.

Just as another point though guys. Depending on the type of battery you should still check the battery on occasion. Check Electrolite level unless its a sealed battery, but also, as jaythro suggests, corrosion on the terminals will be as bad as it would be in the socket.

If you've only got a charger with crocodile clips, remove the starter motor cover and attach the live to the starter motor terminal, and earth the earth terminal and that will also charge the battery.

So I could do the same using the "jump start" mod thing?

didnt work

tried charging via power socket and for some reason it didnt work. managed to attach the croc clips from the charger direct to the battery while fitted-worked ok , presume its ok to do this without disconnecting snything from the battery?

If you`ve got only got croc clips on your charger, how on earth (pun not intended) were you trying to charge via the accessory socket ?? :nenau

Incidentally....I know how to do it that way...with croc clips.

But it would have worked....so I`m interested to know how you were unsuccessful.

had an old streetpilot cable with the bm plug on the end , cut the cable in half and attatched the croc clips to ea cable , might be the socket needs a clean and was not getting a good connection , anyway the croc clips stright to the battery works ok.

The first time I tried to charge via the socket it was ineffective due to corrosion on the cable connector behind the starter cover, my local car accessory shop has cigar lighter plugs that convert to BMW style plugs by removing a piece on the end, I have used my car charger through the jump start point too.

Why not lift the tank and put a couple of cables with a plug on the battery and get matching plugs for the charger. All you have to do then is lift the seat.
2 ring terminals
3 small connectors of your choice (1 for the cable from the battery, the other 2 for the charger cable you had to cut, this allows the croc clips to be reattached for normal charging)
job done

Old thread, I know but just in case....

The reason your Streetpilot cable didn't work is because the 'plug' bit contains a resistor (or perhaps even a switchmode regulator) which drops the voltage to the 5v that the Streetpilot wants. This will confuse your charger.

A proper plug will probably work just fine.

Another related battery charging question. This might sound silly, but does the ignition have to be on in order to charge the battery. I have just acquired a 2002 1150GS and the charging light on the battery charger will only show when the ignition is on - suggesting that the accessory socket is isolated from the battery when switched off.

On the other hand it could be something to do with the charger I'm using. I have a good BMW one back in France, but we thought we could make do with a very basic model until we get home. May be not?!
