Bike was leaning a bit more than normal so looked at the side stand and noticed it had cracked  Is it possible to weld and if so, what type of welding, or would I be better off sourcing a good used one? Any thoughts gratefully received.

I just bought a new sideside for my 'Berg on Saturday. It wasn't worth the faff of trying to fix the old one.

You can pop over and have a go at welding it if you want, but you get to take it off and put it on again:thumb2

It's better to fix the Berg one's rather than buy new, that way they can be made stronger at the same time:thumb

Funny, I was just gonna post the same - mine went just below the pivot point (it seems a common thing on Bergs :nenau) so I welded a sleeve around that point in order to beef it up.

I've welded a kick start on an XT550, with the same sort of split , though mine was in two pieces, and it held fine.

I just set the MIG welder to its highest setting and laid a bead on the exterior face.
I then ground it down for neatness, and so it would twist back in towards the bike.

It really depends on the cost of the new stand.
tbh, I did buy a replacement kick start too, as did not want to be stuck in the @rse end of nowhere trying to bump a muddy 550.

Replace

It's possible to weld that sidestand properly - but only if it's prepped properly by vee-ing out crack with a angle grinder etc, but that crack also ends in the thread for the sidestand pivot screw (metric fine I think) which would need re-tapped and is already a bit of a weak spot with the sidestand design & the hole for the switch would also need re-drilled.
So, on this occasion I would vote for picking up another sidestand (ebay?) - easier & safer.

There'e plenty on ebay Germany. If you contact the seller and offer to arrange a courier, you'll usually get a sale. Some chaps even post over here without hesitation, you just have to ask.

Well Spotted

Well spotted Madmountainman - plenty of choice including one in the Netherlands with a "bigfoot" pad attached - there you go Slime bomb - sorted:thumb.

Motorworks want £117.00 for a new one!!! None on ebay neither. Thanks for the offer Vern, I'll keep it in mind.

I've got one, good condition , no cracks...the light is reflecting oddly on the base in this crap pic, but it's not rusty

£30 + post at cost?
