Based on the lastest news story involving a priest leaving the priesthood after falling in love in Derry here. Is it now time that priests should be allowed to marry ?

I personally feel they should be allowed to choose, either to marry or follow a life of celibacy.

What do others think ?

I can't see why not.
If the religion approves of marriage for it's flock, why not for the bloke doing the shouty bits at the weekend..?

I really like the down to earth way you put this, and I do agree with you. I see no reason for this rule any longer.

As you can see from the closely guarded secret reprinted below and revealed for the first time on UKGSERS there is no reason at all why priests should not marry.

A young monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to helping the other monks in copying the old canons and laws of the church by hand. He notices, however, that all of the monks are copying from copies, not from the original manuscript. So, the new monk goes to the head abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up! In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies.

The head monk, says, "We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son."
He goes down into the dark caves underneath the monastery where the
original manuscripts are held as archives in a locked vault that hasn't been opened for hundreds of years.. Hours go by and nobody sees the old abbot.

So, the young monk gets worried and goes down to look for him. He sees
him banging his head against the wall and wailing.
"We missed the R! ?We missed the R! We missed the R!"
His forehead is all bloody and bruised and he is crying uncontrollably.

The young monk asks the old abbot, "What's wrong, father?"
With A choking voice, the old abbot replies,

It is only the Roman Catholics that are not allowed to be married. Marronite Catholics are allowed as long as they were married before they joined (or something like that). I read an article recently about a Catholic priest in Canberra that was married he was Eastern European.

Leave the MONKS out of this..

Given the history and purpose of the high Christian churches should they exist at all in their current format?

Marronite's who are married already can become priests, in my not so distant past a class mate, a marronite deacon, got married prior to being ordained a priest. Marronites are in communion with the Roman Catholic Church:rob
