Is my engine doomed?

Hello all. Yesterday, I change motor oil and filter. Start engine, everythings fine. Next morning I drive job, 40km and what? Oil pressure light flash in idle. I stop engine and try to remember, use google and then I get it! I did not install that O-ring on oil filter cover. Propably it drops on floor, when I open filter cover. I left bike on job, come home my friend Focus and find that O-ring on my carage. Tomorrow I install O ring on my bike.
Before I stop engine, it runs fine but how is it? Is there coming engine overhaul soon?

Joking aside I've known them go perfectly OK if you're lucky.
I personally have known only one go bang with less than 500 miles before noticing the seal missing .....
Also know of one that did a whole service distance and was only noticed missing then..

Lucky bastard, he'd even had "occasional" oil light at tickover...so he told us later

Thanks prof, I sleep my night well. One question: There is also paper gasket. My friend says its not necessary?
And one more, correck place for steel shim? Between O-ring and filter? I have keep it between cover and o-ring over five years.
