My 1200GS's warranty runs out next March - its done 6,600 miles to date and no real problems.

I need some advice.

Is it worth keeping, is it a good buy in the long run, can it be used daily as a commute with no real problems?

It bothers me a little with the complicated electronics, am I destined for big repair bills with BMW dealers?

Not sure which way to jump.......

I'm prepared to save you from all the hideous failures that may befall your 1200.
If you could just deliver it to me I will exchange it for what I believe is a realistic price: 1 balloon on a stick.

Just think of all the worry I am taking on board.....maybe you ought to give me some cash too?

Don't delay: Financial ruin may be moments away....

:D :D :D :beerjug: :D :D :D

......honestly, they're rubbish.....:P

See how much part ex they`ll give you for another. The extra cost may justify a new bike.

My daily commute is a round trip of 120 miles. I do it in all weathers. And I enjoy the touring, so mine did 18,000 miles in a year. I’ve not found a nicer bike than the 12GS. However, perhaps I’ve been unlucky but there have been a raft of issues with it. Recovered to the dealer 5 times, the last resulting in 4 weeks in a courtesy car while they waited for the parts. So Charlie, if I still had it I would take out an extended warrantee! But I’ve read elsewhere on this website that it costs £600 for a one year warrantee extension. So there’s the rub. I went back to the dealership…spent quite a bit of time negotiating, and eventually those very nice people at Mill BMW (Sunderland) made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. I traded in my 14 month 12GS with 18k miles for a brand new one with TWO YEARS warrantee for a cash adjustment of £2k – or considering the option of extending the warrantee on mine, that’s £1400 for the extra year’s warrantee and a brand new bike. Seemed like a good deal to me.

Guys,
It really depends if you like the bike or not. If you do, it wil have foibles.
If you don't, it will have serious breakdowns and design failures!
Q.E.D.

Keep it just have it checked over befor the warranty runs out .
who says you will last 12 months humans ain't that reliable :D

given you'll take a 30% hit in the 1st year and another 10% in the second I'd think about it with the low mileage that you have.

if you're really worried...
i'll swap you my lovely 1100GS
its just had a new back tyre and i'll throw a set of rear brake pads in too......

it would be a wrench...but i would do it for a fellow GSer....

You are a bit of a worrier eh?

I bought the GS with a view to keeping it for at least 4 years if not more. I will use it for commuting around 70 miles a day for about 8 or 9 months a year and expect to do up to 10k miles a year.

If it becomes consistently unreliable then I'll consider changing. Otherwise, it should be a keeper.

Above all, the question about whether you like it is the most important of all!

Enjoy

Seems to me that you're considering the jump based not on personal experience but based on other peoples issues. I'd argue the "better the devil you know" scenario!!

You're bike doesn't seem to have had any major issues, so why should it start now? Just coz others have doesn't necessarily mean you will....

My neighbour was burgled a couple of months ago, i've not felt the need to move though :D

If you change your bike now, who's to say you won't chop in your good bike for a friday afternooner???

If you'd had loads of problems, maybe it'd be different, but as you haven't, i think "jumping ship" is somewhat nuts...

just my opinion ofcourse....

Good luck with whatever you choose to do...

My theory is to ride it hard whilst under warranty. Mine is a March '04 bike and has 17k on the clock.....2k put on last week around Switzerland. Hopefully any 'faults' will be found during that period. Its a theory anyhow:)

Your mistake Charlie Boy is to read this forum! It represents a very small number of 1200GS owners so you are getting a very unbalanced view of the bike.
