Is the Haynes manual any good?

Given that it looks like I'm going to replace my gearbox seals myself, I was wondering how good the Haynes manual is?

Anyone any comments on it? Are there any better manuals available for the 1200GS?

Cheers, Ross.

Ah, I see, it's the BMW repair manual. Okay, I'll get hold of that anyway. Thanks for the pointer.

Would still be interested to know if the Haynes is any good.

Cheers, Ross.

No experience of Haynes on a GS but I had the "official" manual and the Haynes for my Yamaha. One problem with the official manuals is they tend to have lots of "use workshop tool 123-456/6" while Haynes tends to say "you can get it off with a hammer and a pair of Mole grips".

Haynes aren't perfect but they will often give you this sort of "work around"

Haven't used a haynes for this bike but they've been good in the past.

Sent you a PM:thumb

I've got the Haynes manual for the 12 and its pretty good. They seem to have moved a away from the 'rebuild is the reverse of dismantlement' days and I couldn't see any glaring bodges. Better than the workshop manuals I reckon for the reason noted above - they are aimed at home spanner wielders not trained garage mechanics.

So whats the cheapest you can get your hands on the Haynes manuals for? Found one for £16.75 inc delivery (ebay) but that seems to be as low as they go. I'm sure i've never paid much more than a tenner for Haynes in the past:confused:

Thanks guys, Nippy Normans sounds like it's the cheapest option. I'll pick one up from there and will get hold of the BMW repair CD thingy as well.

Cheers, Ross.

Haynes

:thumb2 Haynes - Reprom is OK but of course needs a pc. I don't carry one on the bike so a manual for me is best.
I was able to follow from it all the work Brian Giles did to my clutch:D

Worth having a Haynes I think even for the little stuff. The disappointing bit in the 1200GS one is where it effectively says "ABS brakes - take it to the dealer" hmmm not hugely helpful.

I have the Hynes and the RepRom, Haynes is fine for most things, I havent found any problems with it. The RepRom CD is ok for replacing parts but I don't see any diagnostics on it, remember its for trained BMW mechanics,

I havent seen the Clymer for the GS12, but had them for Harleys, they may be twice the book but 2 x crap is still crap. They are American biased, and for even simple things it say "refer to dealer" there are reams and reams of warnings, sorry but obviously litigation in the US is so crazy now that even advising someone to use a spaner can get you in court.... so Clymer mostly advise you to 'refer to dealer....'

get the haynes, its fine.
