....is the new Africa Twin Sh1te?

Great, but the GS is probably the bike of the last decade and a half! - the AT is a 'good' bike but not a great bike like the GS.

Spot on................the GS has been THEbig Adv bike for the last 2 decades, starting with the 1100/1150 and since 2005 more so with the 1200's

Nobody can shake it off, the sum of the parts adds up to the very best bike in the class

In 2003 Honda had to heavily discount the last of 750 AT's........underpowered,uncomfy and overweight were my lasting memory of the 750

I'm assuming you mean sales figures....

Would this have been the case if Charlie and Ewan had done their trip on another marque?

Just asking...

Thats a good point.

I think their films had a huge impact and would, arguably, have delivered similar success for another vendor.

It strikes me that it's the other way around. A/T owners saying that they love their bikes and 'Some' GS owners barking them down 'because the GS is the best bike in the world!!' though secretly I think there's a bit of insecurity behind it all because Honda have dared to buck the trend of more power = better and have built something that isn't all about it's stats, it's about the way it rides. Reading between the lines I get a feeling of "But it isn't as powerful, how can it be better??"

None of which matters because we all know what the best adventure bike ever made is ... KTM 950 Adventure :dabble

It's a great pantomime to watch though!

I spent the last two days riding the AT off road at the Dave Thorpe Honda Adventure Centre in Wales. It was very good. In my opinion the AT is a big trail bike more than an 'adventure' bike - it has more in common with my little Yamaha TTR250 than a GS or bikes of that ilk. It reminded me a bit of the old KTM 950 - though a bit more user friendly. They had us doing proper trail bike riding - up and down muddy and rocky hills through the forest etc. It is a bike that really inspires confidence off road - it just needs decent tyres to do so (our bikes had Metzeler Karoo 3s on them). Everyone was pushing it and fell off a couple of times but the bike really crashes pretty well. Plus at 230 kg a couple of people working together can pick it up easily. You can even do it on your own at a pinch. By the end of the 2 days I'd built up enough confidence and learnt enough new techniques that I was tackling off-road terrain that I would previously have struggled to do on my 250! It was also pretty darn good on the road as well. Fast and nimble, with less power than the big KTMs and less comfortable than the GS for long distances but an all round pretty excellent package - albeit perhaps lacking a little in character.
