Is there a car that can replace GSA tarmac thrills?

You will miss the GS like someone took your arm & it will end in tears.

Get a less costly car and keep the bike. There is a lot of good stuff about and as others say quick cars on paper cant do quick in the real world.

This was at the bottom end of the market but same principle -

I had a Punto HGT - 1746cc of Alfa engine making 130bhp in a little body with good suspension, traction, ABS, aircon, blah blah. Great fun on clear roads, but in reality no better than the family Laguna saloon. I even got stopped by the plod for overtaking not that I was taking any risks. He probably assumed I was a yoof with no insurance but gave his spiel anyway. The only time I have been stopped on the bike was when my number plate fell off.

When I put the bike back on the road, the Punto hardly got used. We now have a family car and the GSA which I use all year around. I intend to ride my bike(s) until I'm no longer physically able to. Life is for living.

DONT SELL THE BIKE.

Keep the bike and get a decent used car.

I've also got on the drive ....

Smart roadster - brabus.

55mpg, stupidly quick, turbo, mapable, rwd, rear engined, cheap to own, almost never see another on the road.

Oh and the panels are interchangeable, so you can always chage the colour.

I quite fancy a "classic" Citroen CX turbo. Recently I had to really work hard to catch up with a Turbo II in the distance ahead. Surprisingly fast and cornered like it was on rails.

Good ones are hard to find, but they are still attention grabbers and modern rust proofing keeps them looking good.

The Avantime is another interesting car which Renault screwed up marketing. Very few came into UK so values are static if not appreciating.

Go for a Vauxhall VXR8,

Highly impractical but huge grin factor, makes me smile every time i drive mine.

But sadly I think my ownership is coming to an end as i want something to carry my Husky in without worrying about dog hairs.

I am with Fanum on this MORGAN. every time.

You will not get a plus 8 for that sort of money, but a nice 4/4 is within budget. I have had 6 over the last 20 years, raced them , toured Europe, commuted to work, even had sex in them a few times. The last one bought new 1996, for £33K sold 2011 for £29500. not bad as it had 55K miles. in fact non of them I ever lost money on, and enjoyed every minute.

only 1 car thats ever scared me thrill wise ariel atom V8:eek:

Buy a cheap WRX STi Imprezza, quick & practical

Spend the money saved on decent tyres and a few simple mods to the engine to make it really fly:thumb2

The 5 door 'Puppy Scarer' is the model I like, a bit less 'Welsh YFC yobbo' than the 4 door.

...........Ever tried a Jeep Grand cherokee Hemi............Superb!

MX5 just sold mine on this site because I needed 4 seats...

You can get a great one well inside your budget, see how much I sold mine for.

They have the right mix of just enough refinement and great driving fun.

And I dispute they are not quick enough, roads that need more power for thrills are rare and full and cars that have that power are to big for the empty ones that the MX5 can belt down.

I've just bought a cracking 330D MSport, it goes like stink and grips well but it ain't no MX5 when it comes to fun

All that said if I had the dish I buy the latest boxer :-)
I will go for quad bikes , there are fantastic on and off the road !
I tried them in New Zealand and I absolutely love them !
If you want a car then go for a nice Jaguar V8 , they sound and perform fantastic to a fraction off price on what you pay for a sport car !
Best off luck !

My tuppence worth... Wouldn't even consider a modern car, they're all much the same..
I'd go for an older car.. Big Healey, E Type.. TR.. MG etc.. you may have to learn how to drive again.. But you'll have tremendous fun without having to drive like a nutcase.

Avoid the stereotypical choices, MX5 - TT - Boxster save some dosh and get yourself a slice of Italian V6 heaven for around £12k

Current shape Alfa Spyder 3.2 V6 , should be able to pick up 4yr old car with 25-30k miles one her.

Bellisimo:drool

Absolutely.this would have been the car of my choice when looking to change Joannes Z3,but it was her choice.

Similar to the op we were looking to spend about 18k ended up spending a bit more but the car is warranted and serviced for 5 yrs.

That car being a "Mini cooper s roadster",must say it is an absolute hoot to drive sticks like excrement to the proverbial and goes like stink :thumb2

+1 for the subaru, i had a sti putting out 330bhp, with 4 seats and a big boot, ive also had many mx-5's one in particular with 260bhp, turbo etc both fantastic cars, you could do both with the money your thinking of spending, and buy a rgv250 just for the smell and noise :thumb

Most fun by far is the Citroen 2CV,. When I took my first Impreza turbo in for service they asked what I thought and I told them not as much fun as the 2CV. You can thrash them all day long, corner on he doorhandles, surprise a few people and all without doing silly speeds. The Impreza on the other hand was great fun but a bit like a litre sports bike you could not get near it's potential on public roads. Didn't stop me buying a second Impreza later and having Prodrive breath on it! When I sold my garage and no longer got my cars insured for free, and had to pay the running cost I sold the Impreza and got an MX5. As has been said great little car and serious fun.

For me it's not about ultimate speed but the enjoyment of making progress. In the 2CV you learn to plan ahead, be in the right gear etc which for me is more satisfying than just using a big powerful engine to do the work.

But nothing I have driven comes close to riding a bike. And as has been said, first sign of traffic and no matter how fast/powerful the car two wheels win every time.

In that case, genuinely, try a Morgan+8

Hold your arms parallel out as far as you can reach in front of you, palms facing together, then point both hands towards 10 'o'clock then 2 'o'clock, allowing your body to follow though as you follow your hands around the room.

That's what driving a Morgan feels like, steering wise....they also accelerate like a bike, brake even better and even if you look like Micky on a bad day, will make you look great :thumb2

Nearest thing you can get to driving a high speed, series two, Land Rover with
the seats removed! also cost a lot more than £18k.

DONT SELL THE BIKE.

Keep the bike and get a decent used car.

That is the answer. You can get a decent car for a couple of grand nowadays, so there's reason (IMHO) for not having both. I love my Subaru Forester (as much as you can something that's not a bike) that come off this site for less than £2,500 a couple of years ago. If I need to take the family or transport something big, I use the car. Otherwise....
