.......make stuff out of carbon fibre? I've PM'd Dutchman, but he's not been on the board for a few days.

I had an idea, the other day, for tank protectors for the Adv tank. They seem prone to getting damaged around the front lower corner if they go over & I've got some very tough MX fork protectors made from C/F so the idea came to me, of moulding the front area of the tank. We could then create C/F covers & put them on in the same way as tank pads. This would provide a tough skin for this vulnerable area of the tank, add very little weight or width to the tank & even act as a cover for an already damaged tank (like the Adv beak extention can).

Anyone out there fancy giving it a go.......or has someone already done it?

How about some made-to-measure fork leg protectors too? Anyone up for it?

 Exactly how many feet thick are you thinking of to protect your particular bike Paul?:D

There's a guy in a small unit on the industrial Estate @ Stokesley, North Yorks, who fabricates small parts in Carbon Fibre...........I'm sure he'd do it.

Just fitted a front Fork Brace in Carbon Fibre (made by him) to the Dakar 650 tonight to support the TT fender and it's a work of art.

Much tricker and lighter than the Showa one.

Don't have his contact details..............but can try to find......let me know

Funnily enough, that's the reason I now have several tanks in my garage...... One with a big dent in it, a standard one to replace it & an Adv one i managed to pick up for £170 in really good condition. Suffice to say that I don't take it off-road anymore (got a 250cc Honda for that.......) ;) :D

Johnny, a name would be useful.......I should be able to track him down from that.

Cheers,

I'm going to see a guy on Saturday, who makes bespoke parts from carbon fibre. The idea is, to give him a chance to look at the tank & see the sort of thing I'm after , then see if he can make up something suitable.

If he makes up a suitable template/mould, he will be able to make others as well as mine so would anyone else be interested in these?

Ignoring cost for a moment, please post here if you're interested. I'll let him know the sort of numbers he may be able to sell & let him give me a price to come back with.

Ask him if he`d be able to do a heel plate/ frame protector for the lh side of a 12GS frame as the paint wears off when my boots rub :(

Paul -- I'd be interested in just such a cover for my Adv. tank .
The leading edge of the standard tank is prone to stone chips , even more so the Adv. tank . -- Jim .

ps. - Off to the T.T. soon ?

Well, I've been to see the C/F guy - he's a retired aerospace composite materials expert - & he can make a mold, produce a template from fibreglass then create as many as necessary from carbonfibre for the princely sum of around £40-45 each set.

I've to contact him after I get back from the TT to organise time for him to get a cast of the tank to make them from. Once I've sortedit, I'll post details for contacting him for any orders.

At that price, I think it's cheap protection

me too... i resorted to sticking silver fabric tape on the bits where my feet touch... not the trickest solution but the colour match is quite good...;)

Sorry guys, I haven't got a 1200 for him to take a mold from. He would certainly be able to make one for you though. I'll have a word next time I see him & then I can put his details onto the board for y'all to contact him.

A cheaper option that I've used on both CC I & CC II is to get an A4 size sheet of 'Motrax' CarbonFibre sticky back....usually £9.99

I cut out a cardboard Template shaped like the frontal area of the Tank, that was then used to cut out the Carbon sheet...sorted...:thumb

Loads left over for other things, maybe even do the frame protection mentioned by Big Lee...
