My thinking ...

Removing the passenger seat and grab rail (on non GSA)

A box that goes across, about 15cm high, and down the other sides, same width as the GSA tank. Probably as low as a pannier so would need an exhaust cutout and not sure if it would clear the paralever given the sides would be closer than any pannier system.

Thoughts?

Yes ...

... despatch riders/couriers use them all the time, although where they come from I've no idea :nenau

Reason..., I'm after a luggage system that doesn't stick out and with similar carrying capacity to two side panniers. I thought this would be a great idea (I don't carry a passenger).

Get an alminium box made up by a fabrication company to your own design and bolt it on. You can get a plate that fits in place of the rear seat with key release facility for easy removal when required.

Ah fair enough......

Would imagine you'd have major packing problems though, with a one piece design (if that's how you meant it)

Narrow panniers plus ortlieb over the top woould be more flexible, probably cheaper and definitely more secure :nenau

Paul's right.....Google up courier supplies or look it up on ebay and you'll find them....big fugly white fibreglass one piece jobbies.......first off on rock though and you'll have a hell of a mess :eek

You're trying to re-invent the wheel again ;)

I've been looking at pannier options but nothing is narrow in the sense of it. I'm thinking no wider than the GSA tank. I've Alpos boxes on SW Motech frames and they are too wide and too flexible.

A one piece design is what I had in mind with a big lid top side. Not just a box but something that wraps around the rear frame.

Ok, you've got me confused....why are you taking the tank as a critical width? the bars are wider :nenau

I don't think I can remember one time on or off road, that I've had problems with width and access that was down to the tank.....you'd be going through some very shaped gaps if you did

Perhaps he doesent fancy leaving any more panniers behind :nenau

Aye aye Ming nearly as good as Gregs earlier joke. :blast

It's more for filtering (though it would be lighter and stronger than a pannier system if it hugged around the rear frame).

The tank or max cylinder heads is critical because the bars can move one way or the other in traffic filtering.

It's just a thought at the moment. I'm yet to nip down lidl's for a cheap welder. :mmmm

This would look good bolted on the back :augie

Wheelies might be a problem though:D

This is the idea I'm carrying forward, I've got the box ready to go but looking for a knackered rear seat. What is this plate you talk off?

I see one for the R1200C but not the GS. It's £96 + vat, something I'm unprepared to pay for what it is. I'll keep looking for a cheap seat - maybe motorworks will have one. :thumb2

Bounce me an email with what you're after; ac-tem @@ igaro .. com

It looks ideal. :clap :thumb2

Yes - it's what you get when you can't pack everything you want.

As oblertone has already mention, what your after has been used for many years by despatch riders.
