Is there taxes to pay, sending item from USA to UK

Just a quick question, do we have to pay any kind of tax if we are sending a motorcycle bag from the US to the UK as a gift? if there is a tax then how can we pay it upfront? I am looking to send this tail bag to a friend of mine in the UK and i really don't want him to pay anything for it.

You will have to decalre the value, as well as stating it is a gift. So put a nominal value of say $140

Think it something like under £135 value to be a gift.
Over that value you pay import duty ( 2 % I think ) and VAT at 20% on the whole amount and often a handling charge on top.

You could contact the seller and ask if they'd send it direct to your friend and what the cost would be? Might not be the cheapest but could be the simplist way of doing it if they know what to do to ensure all taxes are paid by yourself
