Is this Correct Help needed

I have just purchased a 2006 gs1200, this question might have already come up but basically the fuel gauge shows full (when full up) then does not change untill the tank is half empty?

I have taken it to a bmw garage (Cannons braintree) and they have told me that this is normal?

can someone with a 1200 gs same year please come back to me as it seems rediculous that a touring bike should have a fuel gauge that doesnt register half the tank?

p.s. they only told me this after they had replaced the fuel pump and gauge and chrged me for it!!!!

yes it happens, forget using the fuel guage its crap - fill it to the brim and use your trip meter

This is normal BUT the bars in the display are not all the same size so it will take a while for the first bar to drop - it does actually make sense when you think about it, who actually cares what the level of petrol is until it gets to below half full?

Fuel gauges on motorcycles are always only an approximation - the weird and wonderful tank shapes make it difficult for them to be otherwise. Sensible motorcyclists go by the trip meter anyway - one gets an idea pretty quickly how far one can travel before the fuel light comes on - so each time you fill up zero the trip and all is sweetness and light!

Why the blazes would Cannons need to change the fuel pump because the gauge may be misreading? That makes absolutely no sense and sounds like gouging to me.

Apart from that, I always use the trip meter on all vehicles when I fill up - gauges can and do misread, but there's little to go wrong with a trip meter.

Thanks everyone im not going mad then , just seems rediculous that this is the norm and is accepted from someone like BMW.

Cannons said that the gauge is part of the fuel pump assy as i have the old style and not the sencor , they said that the 2006 is where they changed from the old to the new, but what is more worrying and i will be seeing them about this, they did the work and didnt even check to see if the old gauge was ok or what the fault was. NICE ONE!!!!

Yep, the fuel gauge is pants - I ride a 57 plate GSA 1200, and run 10 miles per litre, so circa 330 miles to fill up; it's worked so far
