I know this is a ‘how long is a piece of string’ but I’m finding quotes for my new GS1250 a bit on the high side.

I’m 67 and live in a decent area. My other bikes have never been anywhere near what I’m getting quoted but then again I’ve never tried to insure a £19k bike before. No garage but on private property.

MCE is £249. Not bad but…..it’s MCE.

Bennetts is £477.

C. Nash is £599.

And for some reason Be Moto won’t quote.

Are these sensible and are there others that I can try? I’ve probably been spoiled by only ever having older cheaper bikes.

I'm guessing the issue is no garage.

The issue I think, is the value of the bike.

As has been mentioned on here before - and which seems to me like a credible notion - for new bikes insurance companies cover themselves for the fact that policies cover the cost of a replacement for the first 6 months. For my 1250gs, mine fell from 450 to 305 after the first year, and I doubt that simply having another year's ncb meant that discount. My first year and follow up year are with Bemoto - I'm 62 and live in an only 'okay' area - so perhaps it is the lack of garage, as mentioned. I'd suspect, more generally, that not having a garage will impact more on a bike, especially a pricey new bike, than a car.

it's 12 months and you missed out saying they cover themselves to buy a brand new bike should you have a theft or other total loss before the bike is a year old

No, in fact it's a minimum of 6 months. Not all will replace after 6 months - if you are ever in that situation I would advise you check your cover. Regards the other, sorry if you weren't clear on what I was communicating.

Dare I say the new £19k GS is probably a far more likely theft prospect than most.

You really need it garaged - is there no availability locally.

Ironically the bike is in in a wooden shed in my back garden. T&G boarding and lined internally in 12mm ply. Security hinges and lock fitted with coach bolts. Overlooked by me and my neighbours either side. Access is along a passageway with locked gates at both ends. Probably as secure as most garages but only Bennetts (as far as I know) will accept a wooden shed as bike storage.

For the rest the only option for me is ‘on private property’ or similar.

Anyway it is what it is. The bikes bought now so I’m not sending it back because the insurance is high. Like I said I was more used to quotes of under £100 for older bikes.

That’ll teach me for getting a new bike.

You’ll find a lot won’t cover you under their “garaging rules” irrespective of what it’s constructed of

Yes I’ve been messing around with quotes, doing it with and without garaging and it does make a big difference.

Annoying because the only option some have is ‘in private ground’ which is basically sticking it in your garden.

They will not class a wooden shed as a secure place. They want bricks and mortar. Saying that have you thought of one of those metal garages?. You can get them in all sizes, right down to garden shed size. They are classed as garages.

Some do. Carole Nash were happy to accept my wooden shed as a garage.
