just done the fluid change in the gearbox and fd,an easy task, anyway with bike on the center stand and going up through the gears up to sixth with the speedo showing about ninty, then shut the throttle off and pull the clutch in there is a type of wirring noise ,now i know there is no weight on fd when the bike is on the center stand ,but just wondered if this is the norm.
i am not just new to bmw,s,but also shaft drives.
on the road it seems absolutly fine.
thanks folks.

Try dropping it of the centre stand at ninety
I am sure the noise will disappear

What kind of a noise does it make when you take it up to the red line in sixth, then holding the clutch in, change down to first as quickly as you can, then let the clutch out?

:augie

on the stand and in gear with no load on the engine/drivetrain you will get all sorts of noises, cluncks etc, whats it like on the road?
if no play in the rear wheel drive flange assembly dont worry about it.

no noise what so ever on the road ,no free play anywhere at all,all is perfect on the move, just as i said on the center stand at a fair old lick in top ,then pull the clutch and shut the throttle i can hear a wirring noise ,like a rumbling rotation noise.
thanks

That will be the tyres rotating then. Stop worrying. :blast

putting a bike on a centre stand and running it up to 90 miles an hour isnt normal :rob do you also get funny noises in your head? :loopy

If this is not a joke then you are totally mad and should be sectioned without delay!!!

THe noise is backlash in the unloaded gears compounded by the angle of the driveshaft in the swinging arm. They all do that but not many people do it at 90. Not a good idea.

+1 Did you do this with your other bikes and wondered what why the chain was making a noise as it went round at stupid speeds on the stand. its called hearing noises you would never normally hear as the wind noise would make them unheard of.:eek

I am seriously going to stop reading the 1200 section(yes I own one) as some of the questions being asked of late are starting to get embarrassing and if peopel are not taking the piss then they seriously need a reality check about getting on the bike in the first place.:blast

Rant over

+1. And I own one too . Its why I have pretty much given up being here. Of course it could be some of our 1100/1150 friends having a wind up ........

For gods sake man.... didnt you read the manual?

you are doing it wrong.... you need to take it to 126mph, hold it there for 5 mins, then bring it down in 15mph steps holding each step for 30 secs.

this allows the oil to penetrate all the bearings properly, any other method means the bearings are not properly lubricated and will result in early failure of the FD.
