Just wondering if anybody else has same experience?

I've got a descent 1" wide wear band all the way round my front tyre (Conti Trail Attack 2) these been on the bike from new (march this year) and covered 7k miles, roughly 3k of which two up. Tyre pressures are always spot on as get them checked regularly.

I am asking as I never had a front tyre square off on me before.

Should I be worried or should I replace both tyres immediately? Was told that squared of front tyre can cause a "tank slapper", something I do not wish to experience ever.

I’ve had squared fronts before. They ruin the handling and cause more pronounced skipping over white lines and overbanding but I’ve never felt unsafe. Having said that I would change mine if they were squared to the degree yours are just to get the handling back.

I am not sure about tyres being responsible for tank slippers solely as there is usually some other factor involved. Also many people refer to major wobbles as tank slappers. Real tank slappers are rarely recovered and anyone who has had one will remember it simply through the injuries received from the resulting crash! I believe they are quite rare and very, very unlikely.

Perfectly normal .... that's just how Trail Attacks wear

I've never heard of or experienced myself a 'tank slapper' when my TE's have worn like this. You do however, get a very slight shimmy through the bars at around 20mph when slowing down without applying the brakes. This disappears when you rebalance the wheel :thumb2

If you are in any doubt then change it :thumb

I had a Suzuki GS1000 with silly little clip on bars that used to frighten me to death with tank slappers

Back to the OP I have never used that particular tyre so cant comment on that but my fronts usually "peak" up not square off and i have never had a squared off front

I think it is unusual

A GPZ600R that slapped so badly over the bridge on the Foleshill Rd it pushed the pads back into the calipers......
I've seen fronts squared like that on couriers, etc but never on one thats ridden hard.
Mine usually look like someone has shaved them into a triangle :D

Mine did it on the NW500 . It became almost unridable truly horrible . Tyres had 5000 miles on them at the end . New tyres trail attack sorted it .

Just a squared off tire that would upset the best handling characteristics of any motorcycle- never heard them attributed to tank slappers and cannot see that being correct. 7,000 miles out of a front doesn't seem brilliant tbh. Do you check pressures regularly?

Looks like you need to tick motorway on avoidances.

:beerjug:

In 7k I've must've spent so far max 600 miles. I hate motorways, just such a bland journey and experience when I'm on them. Not to mention walkers who sit in the middle/fast lane for miles on end and you are forced to undertake.

Ohh and yes it is ticked as an avoidance.

As per #1 post..... every time I am at the fuel station. Generally every 10-12 days unless I am on a road trip then pressures and condition of the tyres daily, just to make sure no crap on them that would potentially lead to punctures.

I've never had a front square off. Never. They always go on the right-hand side first. Always.

Likewise. I've been riding now 11 years and this is first time I had this kind of wear. It might just be the nature of this particular tyre.

Hard braking its a lot of weight to stop?

I agree, normal but accelerated wear because of the 2 up.. 1 little ride up/down the Stelvio will wear the edges, 2 little rides same area will shred the edges of the tyre..
but with winter approaching I would fit a new pair..
Great tyres in my opinion, given choice I'll never buy anything else..
