Is this problem caused by my speedo sensor playing up?

I have concluded that the ABS/Speedo sensor is temperature sensitive. Although I have a replacement sensor I have not fitted yet as the problem has gone away. It only happens when in frosty weather. I am sure the fault will come back next winter so will fit the replacement part when convenient of the summer months

Temperature dependant faults are usually a sign of a failing part, if its electrical,

I had a crank sensor on my Impreza that would always fail once the car was warm. a sh breakers one cured it.

looking at the original part, all reading were OK, until you warmed it, then it went OS .

Keep your original as a back up / get me home
