Having searched and read through the posts here I must admit the more I read the more paranoid I become.
I bought a trickle charger when I had my VTR1000F and it worked fine. Attached below is the blurb that came with it. It is 12v charger

These 240 Volt Power Packs are designed for charging lead acid type batteries. They are fully automatic in as much as they switch to trickle charge when the battery is fully charged. This way you bike is always ready when you are. The charger can be left on indefinitely without damaging the battery, most batteries will slowly self discharge and the lead plates sulphate up which shortens the life of a battery. The battery charger has a charging indicator (LED} will flash to show that the unit is on trickle charge, while a constant LED shows that the unit is on full charge of 350mA

It is made by Powertech. Should this be OK to attach directly to the battery

thanks

As long as a charger is connected to the battery direct then there will be no conflict with the Canbus system on the 1200.

However - I would always ensure that a sealed battery (alkaline) only be charged by a modern(ish) charger with good current limitation.

Old chargers from the 60s were designed for lead-acid batteries, and on "boost" would 'gas' the battery. You don't want this level of charge on a modern sealed battery. That said, if you are using any charger on "trickle" - it should be okay. :thumb

On re-reading your post - It looks like that charger will be okay. You may want to consider fitting a waterproof socket to the battery on the bike and a similar plug on the charger - it is handier and also takes away the chance of one croc clip springing free and earthing out on the frame or whatever

The charger is new and it came with some leads to permanantly attach to the battery and a plug that connects to the charger wire. Just need to cable tie the lead to the bike. It was quite convenient on the old bike and worked well.

You're sorted then :thumb
