Isle of Skye and Raasay trip March 2009

Fantastic piccies but I needed a cup of hot tea and some toast to keep warm whilst I looked through them - who mocks heated grips?

That's one of the things that's really 'getting me' at the moment, the fact we'll be setting off in one extreme of weather and arriving at the other extreme................

I am told there is no such thing as bad weather, just incorrect clothing.
I have HG textile gear, which I had hoped would be ok, however I am no expert, I dont even know what stitch is ? Maybe the more experienced people have some advice on this.

Great write-up Roger. I have ventured that way in winter in a car a few times, but never had permission for a winter trip on the bike.

Textile gear is the way to go IMPO combined with multiple layers of clothing underneath it rather than just one item like a jumper to trap your body heat.

The Stitch which was referred to earlier is a one piece textile suit, totally waterproof any great for touring but not able to keep me warm in all day riding on the trip, was fine for initially then I started to get seriously cold.

As has been said it's worth finding this out before the trip rather than on it, I'll be switching to a HG Turaeg suit with layers underneath and a 2 piece waterproof suit over the top.

What suit have you currently?

+1 :thumb2

Top report Roger, looks like you had a good time.

I'm still planning on wearing the RevIt gear I normally wear. It's seen me through this winter so would assume it will next January too. I may add some thermal underwear as part of the layering plus some additional waterproof oversuit as waterproof in the crotch area seems to be somewhat of an elusive target

The scene in LWD where the frenchman is taking the P out of Boorman and McGregor while putting on his comfortable waterproofs and they're whinging about being cold and wet sticks in my mind :rob

Fantastic scenery and great pictures, Roger! :clap

Gear is one aspect, the road conditions in January another... Keeping my fingers crossed that your route will be ice-free next year. :thumb2

great pics roger and thanks for taking the freeze to snap them. am doing that run in may, and at the rate this winter is hanging around, the snow may well still be there. well done! :thumb

Have been using HG cruise suit in upchuck daylight green, Think the jacket was about £300 ish, and the trousers with built in mini waistcoat, maybe £225 ish, and no complaints about body temp, (not ridden in freezing temps yet) although did end up with damp nether regions after 4 hours of rain, so now have a waterproof over suit, its having the sence to put it on though!!

HG Cruise is up to the trip, had one myself but not in upchuck green :comfort

Id combine it with the waterproof over suit and some decent base layers to really keep the heat where it belongs :thumb

Anyone here tried a gaucho? It may look a bit :ymca but for £99 I could live with that, if it actually works...:augie
