Who is the 'best' ISP for the home-based individual? No cable connection in our area but the local exchange has broadband.

Why?

I have been a long term AOL and it is beginning to really suck with constant disconnections, slow feed and no back up service. The fault is all 'mine' because it is my computer however the computer is fully optimised and uses XP not Vista.

I don't want all the bells and whistles just good solid connections and a fast connection.

It's not fashionable to recommend BT, lots of people have problems with them. But my connection is usually fairly good, and I'm not convinced that anyone else is actually significantly better without paying mucho dinero.

I would recommend BT for the inexperienced :thumb2 Very helpful with remote connect etc and they do own all the wires :)

BT for the inexperienced

At what?

Shouting down the phone (if it still works, see Talk, talk) at customers svs, cos your broadband ain't working AGAIN.:D:D

You mentioned the main reason I went with BT, they own the wires and exchanges, which means one less company in the loop if things go t*ts up.

Town or Country?

Another vote for BT - usual things, own the wire, no problems, etc. PLUS I live miles from the nearest exchange and the best anyone else can offer is 1/2 meg line. BT have recently upgraded me to 2 meg. :thumb2

PLUS - bandwith. My son lives in London and has a 8 meg line with another ISP. But when he comes home he is always amazed at the speed he can dowload. Cause we may have a lower capacity line in terms of line speed, but our bandwith is much greater cause of the fewer people on the line.
