Issues with the new Bumblebee

Hi guys,

I never have the best of luck when buying bikes, and at the moment this seems to be continuing. I went to adjust my shock as the previous owner had it on the softest spring setting, and the chrome ring (and a plastic one too I believe) split and almost came out from between the adjuster and the spring.

Is my shock officially dead now or is it possible / viable to use it? Not sure as to the availability of spares etc. Alternatively if someone has a decent shock they will sell me that would be an option.

Also if someone has a set of header pipes in good condition that would be a bonus as they are blowing. They were not blowing when I checked the bike, and the jury is out as to whether it is coincidence or if they were bodged for the sale. I am so pants at checking out bikes when I buy them, I really am.

I am still hopeful for some good days doing mild green laning once I get over this little issue, and I could just do with a bit of support to stop me sulking. If nothing else, do it for the sake of my other half!

What year is the bike ?

Does it have a standard rear shock ?

Are the downpipes perforated or just blowing from the head joints ?


A couple of pictures of the offending parts would be very useful.


These things are quite easy to work on once you have got over the initial worry about putting spanners on it

OOH, That don't sound good

I think I heard somewhere that the rear shock is rebuildable, though who by I don't know. However I hope it is because I might be looking to have one shortened quite soon.
Have a look on ebay I saw Hagon shocks for the 80/100GS.

As you live in Essex, you might want to have a word with Keith and Darren at MCTechnics in Stowmarket - Darren'll be able to tell you if it's rebuildable. That's about the third referral this week, I should be on commission.

BM, I would be most grateful for the bits from your dead shock if they would help, and I guess all I need to do is get some spring compressors from somewhere.

Depends how old/mileage that shocker has been through..also ensure there IS damping in there. Sometimes better to bite the bullet and replace the whole lot

Re the downpipes..if they are blowing at the heads.....they don't have a gasket as such and are probably just badly seated. . Best to remove the whole exhaust system, clean everything up with wire wool etc..then re-assemble

As far as I am aware it is a standard shock. I assume it is original with 40,000 miles on it so not really sure how much longer it will last, but I would be very grateful for the parts you have.

Be VERY VERY careful unscrewing the header pipes to reseat, IMHO its better to Split the old nuts and replace with new ones from Sherlocks.

Yours has not got the exhaust recycling Gizmo has it ??
if so and it's been blocked off, check that whatever it was blocked off with ain't rusted through DAMHIK

Bit of a simple question which I think I know the answer, but would like confirmation is the outside diameter of the exhaust pipe the measurment that gets quoted in the manuals / description of parts for sale? On my '88 R100GS I measure my pipes as 38mm.

Didn't mention I know it has a Keihan silencer and has a y-piece and downpipes which are stainless, so, are Keihan downpipes 38mm?

And the difficult question, assuming they are 38mm, which gaskets do I get if I need them

I was really pleased when I saw the thread about next June, until I realised we have a short break booked in Normandy for the D Day commemorations.

40,000 miles is about the max for the OEM shock. Mine started to leak at that milage.
It's questionable as to whether they can be rebuilt. ABE may be able to do it.
Hagon is the cheapest replacement, Ohlins the most expensive. I went for another BM unit, as it was better than the Hagon and not much dearer.

+1 on OE BMW damper
I bought one from Motobins for my 80g/s 3 years ago, piece of piss to change over cost >> £100 + vat
the Complete shock was over £200

So as long as the spring free length is ok I am better off just getting a replacement BMW damper? I will make enquiries. I will call Sherlocks in a minute to see what bits they have that may be of use.
