Didn't we used to have an IT help forum here? I can't see it any more.

Can anyone answer me this question, please? I keep getting laptop shut-down followign an error message about Graphics Display Device driver. The Microsoft update site says I can download an updated driver, but won't take me to it.

If I go to the Graphics device website (ATI) there is a "download the newest driver" page, with a separate box for each product.

So, how do I found out which particular version I have, please?

Thanks,

Robin.

Robin, do you mean how do you find out the version number of the driver you currently have or the version of the ATI graphics card you have?

In both cases, the info is in START>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device manager>Display adaptors.......

that will show you what device the system thinks you have and if you click the driver tab, it'll detail the driver version.

If you're updating though, it's largely irrelevant.....when you install a new driver, windows will tell you that it's older than the existing version if it is......so no prob.

If the new driver doesn't come with its own installer (ie double click what is likely to be a .exe file and it'll do the business itself) then follow the path above and find the 'update driver' option, then browse to the place on the PC that you've just saved the driver (sorry, should have said do that bit first ;) )

It'll install it from there, then reboot and it should all be OK.

Another thin gyou can try is from near the end of the above path, delete (uninstall) the device and then reboot- windows will find it on reboot and re-install the drivers you had before.

HTH....shout back if it doesn't :)

What I needed to find out was what the graphics device was - by usigfn the pathyou kindly showed me, I have established it's an ATI Mobility Radeon 7000 IGP! Now I can download the updated driver from the ATI website.

(Couldn't find the "drivers" tab you mentioned, though. Never mind.)

When Mr B is hanging round your house swearing to avenge the arrest of Mr A, just go and start spouting your IT talk at him. He'll soon get bored and go away. :D
