Been looking at a route down .Used Garmin ,works out at 220 mile aprox 6 hrs . Any you guys know a quicker route ??, Turning off at Ardee ,dont fancy the motoeway .
Thanks .
I had the horror of Ardee, Mullingar yesterday and I realise why I don't do it any more.
The best route has some motorway, just to make time.
Take the M1 to the Dunleer turn off and it's Collon and Slane, or stay on the M1 until just before Drogheda and take the road by the Boyne to Slane, then Navan and Trim, to Longwood where you keep straight on ( this road can have potholes and is narrow) to pick up the N4, where it's right for Kinnegad.
You can stop off in Kinnegad for a break, before joining the new dual carriageway/motorway that will take you to Killbeggan, or you can stay on the old road through Milltownpass, Rochfortbridge and Tyrrellspass, but it has silly speed limits now.
Don't be tempted by Tullamore but go through Killbeggan and take the road on your left, as you leave, for Clara, where it is left at the mini roundabout and then right for Ballycumber and Ferbane - leaving Ballycumber, it is hard left and not straight on. You're now on bog roads, so good suspension is welcome.
Left in Ferbane and straight through Cloghan - more bogs roads. You're heading for Nenagh via Borrisokane and there are 2 dodgy junctions where you cross other roads. This is all GS roads, full of bumps and hollows, but the traffic is generally light.
Don't be seduced by the lure of the N7 and the siren call of Limerick, but go straight through Nenagh and pick up the road to Silvermines, where it is right for Newport which is left at 4 way crossroad and up, steeply, over the shoulder of the hill. The road is narrow and there are some moments so take care and expect the unexpected.
Straight on in Newport and more care on the road to the 5 way cross outside Murroe.
I live about 50m from the cross, if you want to call.
Straight on, downhill and right at the T junction with the church, next left opposite the pub, over the river and left again.
It's left as you cross the railway line and on to the N24 to Tipperary.
At the traffic lights in Tipp, turn right and straight on will take you up to the hotel.
From Belfast, it's about 230 miles, 200 to Murroe.
You could do it in 5 hours.
