Airhead Mystery No. 1:

Why, when so many R80G/S photos show the bikes fitted with a big tank (that it probably didn't leave Spandau with), meaning the originals should have been removed and stored, and when over 20,000 were made, is it so difficult (OK, not that difficult, but it's expensive) to get a standard R80G/S tank?

Answers please, written on a large cardboard box, containing a bubble-wrapped solid, paintable G/S tank, ta!

I would imagine that most peeps hang on to them so they can return the bike to original at some point, or maybe use it from time to time when the big tank is not needed. Like wot I do.

I'm not allowed any motorbike bits in the house.

Except the Honda Dax in the spare bedroom, but [pedant mode] mopeds aren't legally the same as motorbike[/pedant mode] so that's different.

I have two. Actually one and a ST one. I'm keeping them unless I can find a larger capacity one to fit and then I'll trade the ST one. Not much use to you I'm sure but I agree with other posts that suggest they're worth hanging on to.

Thankfully I'm not without a tank, having the ST one doing the job perfectly, but my paint sprayer of choice would rather spray tank, side panels and mudguard together, so it just looks a bit odd at the moment.

While another Airhead owner would notice, (with the horror or deep-interest of a fanatical enthusiast), the ST headlamp sitting incorrectly above G/S forks, or the ST footrests not suiting a 21" front wheel, normal people ask me why my little old bike has grey side panels, a black mudguard, an orange seat, a red tank and white hand guards*.

*I realise that many people owning an R100GS from the 90s probably think nothing of being seen on something with an… eccentric… colour scheme!

I remember calling somebody a robbing chancer for trying to sell a mono g/s for £800. How times change? In the early 90s nobody wanted them at all. In fact when ukgser started you could buy a decent low mileage mono for £1000.

I remember calling somebody a robbing chancer for trying to sell a mono g/s for £800. How times change? In the early 90s nobody wanted them at all. In fact when ukgser started you could buy a decent low mileage mono for £1000.

My Bonnie (from the 70s) was £500 about 15 years ago; never raced or rallied. Now I've raced it, rallied it, wheelied it, crashed it a few times and blown it up it's worth many times more. There's a lesson there I'm sure!

The lesson is be more mechanicaly sympathetic and stay on the fcuker.....
