I still can't help thinking that a VFR VTEC engine is more advanced than our boxer twins yet the VFR forum has very little discussion on oil.

I appreciate that the above was somewhat of a 'throw-away' remark but there is a myth on this forum that says that the GS engine is low-tech.

True, the boxer engine is the evolution of a pretty old design but it is built with modern materials to modern designs.

That there is an element of air-cooling in the engine's design means that a higher quality oil (able to cope with a greater span of operating temperatures) is required than with a water cooled engine.

Personally, I'm happy with porridge although I was thinking about upgrading to tomato soup - but it would have to be Heinz - none of this semi-synth tomato soup!

As a relative newcomer to the wonderful world of BMW boxer twins I'm perplexed by this obsession over oil grades. Is there any objective evidence, like full stripdown and dimension and wear checks, that one type or grade of oil is superior to any other?

I don't underestimate the importance of using good quality oil and changing it regularly but is the grade really as critical as suggested by the obsession on this forum? I could understand it better if the discussion concerned FD oil!

Its an obsession in the 1200 section because many of the members have little or no mechanical knowledge and apparently can't RTFM either.

Edit, or search the forum for the answer that has been given a hundred times already.
