Bad day yesterday, the planned ride out with my mates went wrong at the start. Three of us ended up riding west to east through South Yorkshire, a journey made worse by threats of snow, wind and rain. The riding is stop start for junctions, up and down the box for speed limits which seem to change to 30 every half mile. you never get going. This showed the bike at its worst, gearbox stiff, clutch hard, a rattling engine and overall din from the whole bike. Never had noises like these and make me miss the tappet noise and cam chain rattles of old.
Today a run into North Yorkshire, a ride of 165 miles with hardly a junction to cross, the bike was a joy to ride, pulling really well, handling and braking were good, plenty of snow on the ground but the sun was shining, a real good ride out. The only bad point was riding the last five miles through a built up area without wearing my ear plugs, the bike was a bag of spanners again.

I just don't get this boards obsession with how the engine sounds - why does it matter?

If you don't like the sound buy an akrapovic take the baffle out and ride it.

The beauty of riding a bike is that it appeals to all your senses, if it's sounding like a bag of spanners then it's bound to impact on your ride.

Do you really believe this twaddle?

Yes, I enjoy riding motorcycles. But it's hardly a spiritual state.

Judging by the posts on UKGSer it's anything but a beautiful and life affirming experience for most. Buffeting, sore arses, sore legs, problems with oil, what tyres, what helmet, clunky gearboxes, fears of rust (or some staining) will the hotel be biker friendly, is it too tall, am I too tall, sounds like a bag of spanners at anything less than awesome speeds, lower back pain, what should I do with my luggage, I can't find my battery, what's cheapest, will a remap fix it, how about bar risers, not fit for purpose....

Sounds like not of planning went into the mates' ride out, mate.

Maybe its just me :nenau

I only hear the engine in town if I don't have my ear plugs in, and as I almost always wear them, I rarely notice the engine
You also get the added bonus of still being able to hear the exhaust pops and crackles with the plugs in.

Seems he's not the only one with a bag of Snap-On's on some journeys....

Sigh .... It's weird ... :nenau

I took a trip to the smoke today for a lunch meeting (herring on warm potatoes followed by a charcuterie ... :fnikefork) and the bike was absolutely perfect. Parked up, had lunch and a gossip, got back on it three hours later, and it was a pig for the first half hour of town riding. Beats me what it is .... all the time it's being spanked it seems fine, but the minute I bimble on it, it turns into a bag of spanners ... :nenau
