See what I mean Snerkler!
Crazy isn't it that there is no definitive answer.
Which, ultimatly, goes to show just how important it is (not)

It is yeah. And I knew I'd open a can of worms as I've seen the other oil threads on here, but I say blame BMW not me
However, I have the DOHC engine and there is now a definitive answer for these engines, which is 10w-50 fully synthetic, and BMW would prefer you to have Castrol's Power 1 racing. So my thread wasn't in vain after all![]()
Hi Snerks, I use this:-
Make Q8 SBK Racing (wouldn't matter if it wer Motul Castrol Shell et all)
Spec. 10W - 50 API SL Jaso MA Fully Synthetic.
Price £18.57 for 4L (Bigger savings if you buy 25L)
Source. McCulloch Oils
Poulton le Fylde Lancs
Tel, 01253893388
Used it in all my Bikes since 2003 when I discovered it.
Best regards Stretch
PS Bought before Xmass so include more vat
PSS Took it to my dealer for its 600 & 6000 mile service, no problems at all![]()
BMW cant legally tell you that you can only use one brand of oil, they can only insist on a specification.

Yeah, thanks, I always make sure I get the M-series stuff, and carry a spare litre in the boot so I'm never stranded againSnerkler,
FYI there are actually 2 different specs of Castrol Edge 10/60. One specifically for 'BMW M Sport engines' and the other not. The containers are almost identical so just be careful mate...
It's a complete joke you can only use one specific oil and brand. What colour M3 do you have? Are you on the Cutters forum? My E90 has actually been topped up with Mobil One etc in France when I could'nt find the right stuff, but don't tell BMWFS as the lease expires next month!
Unless you're doing track days I don't see any risk, but Herr Bay-em-Vay is of course, always right...
As everyone says, bit of a farce really![]()
Getting a '10 Adventure in April so I'll just go for the cheapest 10-50 within spec for topping up if needed.
Cheers
Roger

So in the UK's climate it appears that we can use any of the oils most of the year. I'm used to just being 'told' what specific oil to use rather than given a choice. Still doesn't say mineral or synthetic etc, and as I've said already mere mortals like myself do not/did not know that you can mix and match![]()
seems like your super duper 2010 twin cam bike is burning helluva lot of oil - you sure the dealer tightened up the sump plug at the last serviceWhat I'm trying to acheive is a lower oil consumption as my bike's right on the limit, ie uses approx 1litres every 1000 miles.

Its a Silverstone DCT. Had it nearly 3 years and 38k miles with no problems whatsoever. Sad day when it goes... best thing on 4 wheels I have ever had, or will have probably.
Not on any M3 forums at the moment, sometimes take a look on pistonheads.
Keep it between the hedges,
Roger

Well just read NEARLY all of your messages on oils. Time for a headache tablet now!! I have a 2004 GS and have been told by dealers now use 10W50. Like all you cannot by that off the shelf but in 1 litre containers. £64.00 for 4 litres!!! Ouch!
I also have a 2000 R1200c and been told to use the same oil as the GS. A lot of hard earned cash for an oil change?
So having read all of your mails I think hein gericke 10 W 50 it is to be for both bikes![]()
There made my mind up.........I think?
