It's no wonder many of us get confused about oil!!!

BMW cant legally tell you that you can only use one brand of oil, they can only insist on a specification. They can refuse to sell any other oil in their dealers though.
As to whether mineral or synthetic. That comes down to what grade you go for as you will not find a 10W50 mineral oil likewise I doubt you will find a 20W50 fully synthetic oil.

It is yeah. And I knew I'd open a can of worms as I've seen the other oil threads on here, but I say blame BMW not me :P

However, I have the DOHC engine and there is now a definitive answer for these engines, which is 10w-50 fully synthetic, and BMW would prefer you to have Castrol's Power 1 racing. So my thread wasn't in vain after all :bounce1:clap:bounce1

Hi Snerks, I use this:-

Make Q8 SBK Racing (wouldn't matter if it wer Motul Castrol Shell et all)

Spec. 10W - 50 API SL Jaso MA Fully Synthetic.

Price £18.57 for 4L (Bigger savings if you buy 25L)

Source. McCulloch Oils
Poulton le Fylde Lancs
Tel, 01253893388

Used it in all my Bikes since 2003 when I discovered it.

Best regards Stretch :)
PS Bought before Xmass so include more vat
PSS Took it to my dealer for its 600 & 6000 mile service, no problems at all :)

Thanks, that's much cheaper :thumb2

Also reminds me of my first holiday in the states watching thursday night thunder. They ran loads of Q8 ads; "The big Q stands for quality, always has always will" ;)

Snerkler,

FYI there are actually 2 different specs of Castrol Edge 10/60. One specifically for 'BMW M Sport engines' and the other not. The containers are almost identical so just be careful mate...

My E90 has actually been topped up with Mobil One etc in France when I could'nt find the right stuff, but don't tell BMWFS as the lease expires next month! :augie
Unless you're doing track days I don't see any risk, but Herr Bay-em-Vay is of course, always right...
As everyone says, bit of a farce really :)

Getting a '10 Adventure in April so I'll just go for the cheapest 10-50 within spec for topping up if needed.

Cheers

Roger

Yeah, thanks, I always make sure I get the M-series stuff, and carry a spare litre in the boot so I'm never stranded again :thumb2

It's a complete joke you can only use one specific oil and brand. What colour M3 do you have? Are you on the Cutters forum?

Snerks, just put the best in that's just as cheap from the right Oil Disributor

I've used the above Q8 in my Fireblade two Hayabusa's my Gixxerthou and my Harley Davidsons.

Suzuki Rizla Racing Team use it as well as Airwaves Ducati and when my 2010 GSA is bouncing off the Rev Limeter I'm glad its in mine :D

Best regards Stretch :)

Has anyone ever gone in for an engine warranty claim and the Main BMW Dealer decided to send an oil sample away for analysis :blast

If I go to my Dealer with a Warranty Problem he's all over me like a rash, yes Mr Stretch, sorry Mr Stretch :blagblah:comfort:beerjug:

Its a Silverstone DCT. Had it nearly 3 years and 38k miles with no problems whatsoever. Sad day when it goes... best thing on 4 wheels I have ever had, or will have probably. :(

Not on any M3 forums at the moment, sometimes take a look on pistonheads.

Keep it between the hedges,

Roger

Ok, I know the page you're referring to thanks, I was wanting to be spoon fed with just one type :thumb
I think this is the page

So in the UK's climate it appears that we can use any of the oils most of the year. I'm used to just being 'told' what specific oil to use rather than given a choice. Still doesn't say mineral or synthetic etc, and as I've said already mere mortals like myself do not/did not know that you can mix and match :thumb2

Was about to post you that page but you found it!! As long as it is API SF grade or better or ACEA A2 or better then whether it is mineral, sem-synthetic or fully synthetic doesn't matter - although most modern oils are semi-synthetic or fully synthetic.

What I'm trying to acheive is a lower oil consumption as my bike's right on the limit, ie uses approx 1litres every 1000 miles.
seems like your super duper 2010 twin cam bike is burning helluva lot of oil - you sure the dealer tightened up the sump plug at the last service :augie

Weird these BM's my 2010 GSA has not needed topping up since it was going in for its 1st service and then I didn't bother because it was going in :rob

I'm off to the Czeck Republic in June and have been advised by a member of this parish to take some spare oil with me

It hasn't needed any before in 8000 miles :nenau

Best regards Stretch :)

I will mention it to them when it goes in for its service :thumb2
Maybe Putoline's sh**e?

What's next then, don't fancy another?

OMG

Well just read all of your messages on oils. Time for a headache tablet now!! I have a 2004 GS and have been told by dealers now use 10W50. Like all you cannot by that off the shelf but in 1 litre containers. £64.00 for 4 litres!!! Ouch!
I also have a 2000 R1200c and been told to use the same oil as the GS. A lot of hard earned cash for an oil change?
So having read all of your mails I think hein gericke 10 W 50 it is to be for both bikes :-)

There made my mind up.........I think?

:blast

Cheapest I've seen Castrol Power 1 racing is £12.25 plus £4.50 postage, so 4 x 1litres bottles = £49, plus £4.50 postage = £53.50 :thumb2
