It's no wonder many of us get confused about oil!!!

Well just read all of your messages on oils. Time for a headache tablet now!! I have a 2004 GS and have been told by dealers now use 10W50. Like all you cannot by that off the shelf but in 1 litre containers. £64.00 for 4 litres!!! Ouch!
I also have a 2000 R1200c and been told to use the same oil as the GS. A lot of hard earned cash for an oil change?
So having read all of your mails I think hein gericke 10 W 50 it is to be for both bikes :-)

There made my mind up.........I think?

:blast

+1 You don't always have to do what you are told. My 08 GSA is still running the same oil as what was first in it and what is stated in the manual. My bike has not had a different engine fitted, the manual is still the same, the Reprom manual states the same and the oil I use is still on the BMW website as being approved for my bike. So I just buy 4 litres of Castrol 20/50 from Opie when they have free shipping for a few pence over £20.:beerjug:

When I traded in my 2008 GS for a 2010 GSA I mentioned to the service manager that I still had a full bottle of Castrol ActEvo 4T 20/50 and would it be OK to use this to top up the new engine, he reckoned it would be.

Oil usage is a funny thing; I used 2 litres in 14000 miles on my 2008 GS and in 2500 miles on my 2010 GSA I've used 0.25 litres. Yet I've seen reports of 1 litre in 1000 miles posted elsewhere. I reckon its all down to how the bikes are run in, I follow the maximum rev guidelines for the first 600 miles, but don't pussy foot around, I ride the bike hard but making sure not to stick at the same revs for too long during the run in period.

I do the same with my new cars, currently an Audi A3, I've always been told these use up to a litre of oil per 1000 miles, I very rarely have to add any. I've used about 1 litre between 3 different A3s in 7 years, the garage reckon I use less because of the way they're run in.

I once put some oil in, it was a lovely golden syrupy one, that went "glug glug" as I poured it. The bottle had some writing and numbers on it, it was a green bottle, or silver, or red. My engine hasn't blown up, blown down, or blown away. I'm putting some more in this weekend, perhaps from a blue bottle this time, it depends on which way the door to the oil shop opens.

What's next then, don't fancy another?

Nah as I am selling my share in the company and moving on, my next 'company' car will be a diesel doing at least 60mpg! Back to reality for me...

Far easier these days to get kicks on bikes anyway, which will always be my first love, so to speak..:)

Cheers

Roger

Confused!!:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Help!

after ringing round BMW dealers today with this question?

"How much is a 6000 mile service on my GS R1200 Adventure 2010.
then had answers from Rainbow, Williams, A Jeffs,Barrie Robson, Pidcocks,
all different?? maybe the fitters get more or less ? per hour?

Anyway i thought then i would also ask about the annual service which also produced huge differences:confused:
The differences then made me think about where else the main charges would occur in a 6,000 miles service and I thought:augie Oil so here we go bag of worms time again, My bike was purchased new last September 2010 model on a 60 plate my prior 2009 GSA used castrol Actevo 20w-50 but when I picked up my new twin cam after 600 miles service i was told to use Putolene so i bought some for top ups!

Now at the 6000 mile stage i am told its Castrol GP 1 Racing 10w-50 fully sythetic oil.. Well I thought if I buy that its got to save me som emoney on the already over priced service charges ! But you try and buy it ? Is there anywhere that sell it at a fair rate? Or have BMW dealers got the full oil well:augie

I forgot to ask how much per litre BMW dealers charge so if and when i do buy some Castrol oil i will have to wait til after the service to know what if anything i have saved? Am I being petty or just daft, should i just do what i have always done and just pay the bill?

I thought about that too and with social networking, facebook, twitter, forums, bike clubs, web sites, emails, web mails etc etc and the Harder we are all having to work to earn a crust I just thought that if more people ask the dealers their prices maybe just maybe they will become more competitive and if they want our business as a customer they will offer something just a little different to keep you.

Old Derbyshire saying "Your cheapest is always your
dearest" :rob Yes but when i aksed the dealer why they were the most expensive on the list they seemed un interested and basicaly if you wont your bike doing by them thats the rate? I have it booked in all the same next Thursday with or without me providing oil......

Also they get you twice cos even though i am having the 6000 mile service the bike will light up and say annual service before its 12 months old and thats brake and clutch fluids becomes another service?

I am not ranting just trying to understand it all..............

SO WHERE DO I BUY SOME CASTROL GP1 RACING 10w-50 oil from and will it save any money as to BMW dealers prices?????

Big D confused:confused:

Yes two services if your doing mileage but they are different services so your oil wont get done again.

GP1 is probably dealer only but you can get 10w60 Castrol edge sport from Halfords for £37.00 which is considerably cheaper than the stealer will charge you and it is of the right spec or better than they recommend. Not all dealers will let you supply your own oil though but some will.

You can get Q8 SBK Racing 10W-50 same spec as the R1 for less than £20 for four litres, I have had my 2010 serviced twice and supplied this to my Main Dealer, no probs :augie

See other posts on here from me, with prices supplier Name Address and Tel. No. :blast

Best regards Stretch :)

By far the cheapest power 1 racing 10w-50 I've seen for 1l.

Halfords online, motorcycleraceparts, orwell.co.uk all sell the oil.

Out of interest who was the cheapest out of Rainbow and Pidcock? If you don't want to post on here would you mind sending me a PM?
I had the shock that servicing was both mileage and age related, and one didn't cancel each other out, so to save a bit of cash I'll be having a slightly late annual service and slightly early 6k service in the next couple of weeks. I normally use Rainbow, but have found that Pidcock's are more willing to offer discounts, with clothing at least anyway.

Piddys are further away from you than Rainbow plus I think their labour rate is more. Rainbow's the cheapest in the dealer network I believe for labour rates. So factor in further travel costs in fuel etc to get there -does it work out better for you in the long run ? Do Piddy's charge for courtesy bikes etc ? Factor all the above into the equation and you'll probably find there's nothing in it.
As for the mileage & age related services its something the car side's been doing for ages.
If you think bike servicing's overpriced have a look at what some car dealerships charge for what is basically a fluid change.
As for " Fitters" - I think a rephrase might be beneficial there !!

Yes but will my local dealer allow it? All a bit strange

D

Derek, I took the oil to my main dealer and they said yes no problem with that.

Its the same spec as the R so how could there be

Best regards Stretch :)
PS its used by Suzuki Rizla Racing Team and Airways Ducati, I haven't used anything else in my Bikes since 2004
