I was in sunny Glasgow over the weekend ... and my Quest seemed to have real issues locating satellites ....

I realise that Glasgow is beyound the civilised world ... but not by much. So I was a bit surprised.

1) Is this a common issues in that area?
2) I had a car with a heated front windscreen .. turned off all the time ( a Freelander) ... would that work in some circumstances to block the GPS signal ?

Thanks

.. sounds like the windscreen had an athermic coating which can restrict signal reception. A quick test, is since Quest is self powered, stand outside the vehicle and get a signal lock then get inside the vehicle, close doors and windoows, hold gps to front windscreen and check signal lock and reception again. The only way to overcome this is by fitting an external antenna.

Otherwise we'll blame it onto Hadrian's wall.

You could have stopped for a minute and put the Quest on the bonnet of the car (that's outside btw ;) and checked if it would have picked up the satellites better...

A bit too late for that now, I presume..?!

:)

I've got a Galaxy with a heated screen. I have to tuck the 2610 out to the edge of the screen (outside the edge of the heating element) otherwise the reception is poor. Might be the same for your screen. :)

It was Glasgow ... go outside !!

I also think would have trouble driving and keeping the Quest on the bonnet, whist being able to see the screen ...

;)

Tis too late now to try anything .... but the first day it worked fine . And then it started to play up !! I was just wondering is Glasgow had some sort of force filed around it ?

... or just ask the way to Jinty McGinty's ( a well known watering hole).

I also use my Quest in the wife's Mondeo and that has a heated screen. Never had a problem with satellite lock so it must be Glasgow ;)

been through to glasgow quite often with my quest in car and on bike, never had any trouble at all?

Assuming your particular GPS was functioning OK, it would either be metal in the windscreen causing a poor signal or interference from vehicle electrics / electronics. the satellite signals are incredibly weak - after all, they dont have a lot or power stations up there! Its usually a photocell job so a pretty low wattage transmitter.

Garmin receivers are very good in fact.

it was intended to be a bit of a tongue in cheek statement.

though regarding the signal strength, Glasgow like most big citys does have a lot of high, solidily built, tightly packed buildings that could easily interfere with an already weak signal, though I use a Tom Tom type receiver in the Mondeo which also has a heated windscreen I can't say I've noticed any effect on signal reception,

maybe the Quest power was a bit low causing the unit to struggle picking up a signal, only a guess.

PS been out on the Buell much TPP?
