itune tracks not appearing on my zumo 500

computer's are not my strong point so please, no pee taking.

Just been updating my sd card with some recently downloaded itune tracks.

trouble is they don't appear when i plug the card into my zumo 500.

Any help, suggestions or advise would be much appreciated.

Think, an Im not sure, its the format that itunes saves them as. Convert them to mpeg and they should be recognised. I had to do the same with mine.

Itunes saves the music files as mp4's There is a built in converter in iTunes to change them to mp3's. Copy all the newly converted mp3's to a new directory and then put the whole lot onto you SD card.

It also depends on where you got the tracks from, if you bought them from the itunes store they are saved in a secure format. You'll need to download a bit of code to translate them.

Still struggling getting the tunes I downloaded from itunes to play, or even be recognised on my Zumo.

It would appear that itunes MPEG4 file format is not recognised by Zumo and MP3 are the answer to my problem.

Question is therefore, how can I change my MPEG4 itune tracks into MP3s?

Go to the Music library in your iTunes programe on your PC.

Right click the song in itunes that you want to convert to MP3. Left click on the words 'convert to MP3' and itunes will create a separate MP3 version of the same song and list it in your Music library immediately underneath the original version of the song. Do the same procedure with all the songs that you want to download onto the zumo.

Then minmise your itunes screen to half size.

Connect your zumo to the computer with the media card installed in the zumo.

Open the My Computer icon on Windows and you should see your Garmin card listed as a removable disk.

Minimise the My Computer window so that you can see both the itunes window and the My Computer window.

Drag the MP3 versions of the songs you have created in iTunes and drop them into the Garmin removable disk in My Computer screen

Disconnect the GPS from the PC. Put the backcover back on. Go to the Media Player program on the GPS and you should find your MP3 files there.

Play one and you should hear some pleasant noise being the sound of the song that you have chosen to listen to.

Solution for you

I've just recently experienced the same problems. itunes does provide a solution, but it's a bit of a faf, in my opinion.

Download this free program, which converts your music to MP3. It's really easy.

You do not need to open itunes to convert the music. You will need to locate the music folder on your computer and select the tracks that you wish to convert. Best select the ones you want to use and copy to a separate / new folder.

Rob, Itunes holds the art in a seperate folder which the mp4 track looks for when it plays - if the folder isn't on your device (which it won't be) then you can't see it.

At the risk of making you lose the will to live, here's a few tips that I've learnt from personal experience when doing the Zumo music thing. I'm sure others have plenty of other experiences but this works for me.

1. Get the files into an mp3 format (through Itunes, converter programme or ripping direct).

2. You then need to get the files onto an SD card. You can drag and drop them but just be aware that windows will only let you do this for a limited number of files into a root folder before it gives up. I believe this is something to do with the type of formatting but there's better things to do than watching 500+ files transfer for half an hour, then seeing the "Cannot Copy xxxxxxxxxxxxx : The directory or file cannot be created." message and it all ends.....

What I do is use Media Player (I'm sure other players work just as well) to manage the files, and simply plug the media card in to the PC (it'll appear as a "device" in the right hand side of Media Player) and drag the tracks that I want onto it and hit "save playlist". This will put the tracks into folders grouped by album / artist. The advantage of managing your files through a programme is that you can synch them properly without the risk of losing or duplicating entries.

3. Stick the SD card into your Zumo and you should now be able to select by artist, album etc.

If you're really bothered about the artwork (I don't know if you can retrieve it from Itunes but would be interested if anyone else has found out how to), you can do it in Media Player before you save the playlist onto the SD card. Go to Library / Album view, and you should see if any art is missing. If it is, right click on the album and "update album info'". Media Player isn't always great at this so you can drag any artwork that you can find onto the album manually.
