iTunes to MP3 ????

Does anyone know of software that will let me convert some of my albums on iTunes into MP3 format so I can play them on the Zumo ??

I know Apple protected their songs but I suspect their is a way round that !!

apple only protect the tunes bought from them.

itunes does have a conversion feature. right click on the tune and its in the context menu there IIRC.

I never even thought to see if iTunes would convert the files itself

Now converting them to MP3 and over to my Zumo they go....

That only works on albums you imported into iTunes.

To convert purchased songs you will need someting like Tunebite

hmmm

looks like i may actually not have remembered that quite correctly. that's just to convert to AAC, which is the format it is likley already in

it seems you need to do a little settings change first, explained here

i checked that, and it seems correct. it certainly enables the "Convert selection to MP3" option anyway

try media monkey, its a cracking program, also comes with a nice auto tagging feature for tagging mp3 files for you.

Itunes definately does it. As I make up CDs full of MP3 tracks. (Music NOT purchased off Itunes).

Get a piece of free software called Doubletwist

This gives you the option to liberate your purchased itunes tracks, plus sync your itunes playlists to your zumo or any other usb device for that matter.

Occasionally errors are thrown on some protected tracks during the syncing process but these tracks will still have been converted to MP£ & be available on your hard drive. So you can simply drag these to the Zumo or its SD card & then use a m3u playlist editor to add the spurious tracks to the playlist.

Just after I'd done it, I found out that you should be able to right-click on the darn things in iTunes and select "Convert to MP3" You may have to go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Importing' and then change the 'Import Using' to 'MP3 Encoder' to enable the option.

This works for music you may have imported or ripped from CD, but if you have purchased music from the itunes store it will be downloaded in an encrypted file type called a "MPEG-4 Audio File (Protected)" or ".m4p". This can only be played via itunes or an ipod.

There are some tools on the internet which are illegal which allow you to convert these encrypted files into normal MP3 files which can be played anywhere by anything.

All in the name of copy protection

Create a new MP3 playlist in itunes go to edit>preferences and a new dialog will open up. Choose the advanced tab in this dialog and go to the importing tab within this on the "import using tab" choose mp3 instead of AAC. Go to your playlist and instead of dragging songs to it from your library go to file> import and navigate to the M4a's that you want to convert using the browse dialog. Re-import the selected files and they will be converted to MP3's. The only downside of this is that you end up with MP3 and m4a versions of your songs in your library. However, its easy to ID the mp3's and m4a versions by having the option of "kind" selected in the song table in the library. Do this by right clicking in the header column of the song table and selecting "Kind" as a header option and planking it somewhere you can see the it on screen. You can set your ipod prefs just to sync with m4a's. By the way I don't even have an ipod but have a wife and two daughters that do! Me and my son have MP3 players

Saves faffing about with bits of software. Does not work with Itunes purchases but I've never bought any.
