Had my ipad delivered today, all connected to wifi, and the 3G sim is up and running, the display shows full network coverage and all seems dandy.

But when I plug it into my laptop to connect it to itunes, i get 'ThisiPad cannot be used because the Aplle Mobile Device service is not started'

I called Orange earlier, and the dude said it was because I hadn't registered the sim, so he did all that for me, and said leave it a few hours and all should be well.

Just come home from a mates house where I was having a gurn over his new VTR SP2, and tried it again, and get the same message..

Any ideas fellow ipad users?

have you got it plugged into your PC's USB port?

iPads need a comparatively large current to charge. not all PC USB ports will provide this.
you could try using the port nearest the front of the PC. long shot, but i have read this is sometimes the port with best power supply. sounds like voodoo to me, but i thought you could test it out :D

or

use the charger it came with. not one of the identical looking ones that came with an old iphone. proper iPad chargers have 10W written in impossibly hard to read lettering on them :)

My son's iPad2 will not charge from the USB (unlike iPhones / iPods). Use the wall charger as suggested.

Don't be fooled by the icon saying "not charging"

Plug it in and it will charge, albeit very slowly but it does charge it :thumb

Many thanks guys, all seems to tally with answers from a few other users!

Now, just got to sort out an Aussie adaptor, I'm off to Canberra for 3 months!

nor i
espeically as the juice from the mains is much higher than the 5v max available to a USB port, i assumed that it would charge (owing to the fact that if it would charge at all, it would be infuriatingly slow!)

oh well, live and learn, now to figure out how to get a dev kit for arduino's for iPads...
